On a Tour with Granny by Julie Seedorf

The Penderghast Puzzle ProtectorsThank you, Dru, for asking me to be your guest. In case many don’t know who I am my name is Granny, well it’s actually Hermiony Vidalia Criony Fiddlestadt, but I don’t let too many people call me that. I’m from Fuchsia, Minnesota. It’s a little town somewhere in Minnesota. We Fuchsians love Minnesota but we have opted out of some of their rules. Have you looked around at outside Minnesota? All the houses are the same. We have someone that tried to make Fuchsia conform, I think his name was Hotty Tot or something close to that but we didn’t want to be like the rest of Minnesota so Mr. Hotty Tot was told to trot and we have our colorful town back to order. But that’s neither here nor there. You can read all about me and the town in The Fuchsia Minnesota books. We document everything you know. It’s all there in pink and purple.

I am here to introduce you to my neighboring community, Brilliant Minnesota, and my friend Delight Delure’s Aunt, Jezabelle Jingle. I don’t know Jezabelle very well. I have met her a time or two when I have popped over to Brilliant to visit Red Hot Momma’s Boutique but I didn’t meet her there. I don’t think Jezabelle would visit Red Hot Momma’s. She seems a little quiet, crafty and very upstanding and brilliant, but then from what Delight tells me everyone in Brilliant is brilliant.

I think we’ll meet Jezabelle and visit her house last. I thought we’d check out the town first. I can’t believe it, they’ve followed the boring pattern. All the businesses are named Brilliant. We have the Brilliant Library, The Brilliant BeDazzle Brewery, The Brilliant Police Station, The Brilliant Bistro – wait-here’s a business that isn’t named Brilliant it’s called the Creamy Cow. At least they have one person that hasn’t succumbed to society.

Delight tells me that Jezabelle lives in the Penderghast neighborhood and they have some strange people there. Let’s walk that way and I’ll tell you what Delight said. She said there is a man by the name of Rock Stone living next to Jezabelle. You might want to make sure you have a lot of time when you talk to him because he talks very slow. He has strange habits according to what Jezabelle told Delight. He comes home at 10:00 p.m., revs his engine, takes a couple of puffs on a cigarette and then disappears into his house.

Delight says one of Jezabelle’s neighbors is the famous writer Miranda Covington. Miranda only comes out of her house at night and never at the same time. Then there is Phoebe Harkins. Well, according to Delight she’s Phoebe and that’s all she would say. And then we have Mr. Warbler, that’s what got me interested in visiting Brilliant. I thought they might need my help. Warbler fell through his floor. Apparently someone is carving up the floors in the old houses. Here’s Jezabelle’s house now.

“Granny what are you doing in Brilliant?”

“Well, Jezzy, I thought you might need my help.”

“It’s Jezabelle to you and I told Delight we had enough trouble and that your Fuchsia amateur detectives should stay away and leave this to The Penderghast Puzzle Protectors.”

“What is the, this, you are referring to Jezabelle?”

“It’s a secret and a puzzle and it’s on a need to know basis and you don’t need to know.”

“Jezabelle, that’s what I always tell Franklin and Silas when they are getting in my way. Are you saying I am getting in your way?”

“Yes I am Hermiony.”

“Well, let me introduce you to your readers. They are following me today to see if you can live up to my reputation. You know—the hooks a crook, the skewer a scoundrel, the snows a sneak and the forks a fugitive. Do you think you can?”

“Thank you for bringing them here today Hermiony, but we here in Brilliant take care of our own. You see this town was founded with brilliance and those brilliant minds in the way of the founding fathers, the Brilliant Brothers, left us a legacy. We just don’t know what it is yet. You see all these Victorian houses? They have held on to secrets for a long time and my neighbors and I, The Penderghast Puzzle Protectors are going to solve the secret. While you may hook, skewer, snow and fork in Fuchsia, we move the puzzle pieces around and capture our culprits with our brilliant minds.”

“Kind of missed something with that dead body they found in Annabelle’s house didn’t ya? Your brilliant minds couldn’t telecommunicate to stop the killer?”

“Thank you all for coming. Granny you must remember you can only see the unseen. Good bye.”

“Well, she shut the door in our face. And she certainly did leave me puzzled. I can only see the unseen. I hate to tell the community of Brilliant but I’m afraid they’ve got me on their hands only–she’s disguised as a nice old lady. Until my next interview folks, this is Granny of Fuchsia signing off. It’s going to be a Brilliant day.

The Penderghast Puzzle Protectors is the first book in the NEW Brilliant, Minnesota mystery series, published by Cozy Cat Press, January 2016.

Jezabelle Jingle and her neighbors in the Penderghast section of Brilliant, Minnesota, have a mystery on their hands. Someone is stealing sections of hardwood floors in their homes and the thefts may be connected to a long-hidden treasure left by the founders of Brilliant. Not only that, there’s a dead body in a basement to add to the mix. Can Jezzy and her quirky friends figure out the puzzle and find the treasure before some other, unknown person–maybe the murderer–beats them to the punch? Or will the town’s Chief of Police, Hank Hardy, prevent the group from their sleuthing? Anything can happen in the strange little town of Brilliant, Minnesota. After all, brilliant minds create brilliant finds!
