A Day in the Life of Sarah Brandt Malloy by Victoria Thompson

Murder In Mornigside HeightsMalloy and I have been back from our honeymoon for several weeks now, and we’re both very grateful that my nursemaid, Maeve, and Malloy’s friend from the New York City Police Department, Gino Donatelli, started a detective agency while we were away. Without it, Malloy would’ve been bored to death, since he’d had to resign from the Police Department. Their first really interesting case after officially setting up an office turned out to be one they needed my help on, too. Thank heaven, because quite frankly, I was feeling a little bored myself.

A young woman who was teaching at the Normal School had been murdered. The Normal School is a college for women that trains them to become teachers, and it should be the safest place in the world. Abigail Northrup’s parents had thought so when they agreed to let her work there, especially when she moved in with two of the other female professors. Malloy asked for my help because he thought I’d know more about college than he did because I was raised in a wealthy family. The truth is that the girls I’d grown up with hadn’t even considered going to college. Rich girls went on European tours. College was for middleclass girls who wanted to be able to make their own way in the world without having to rely on finding a husband to support them. They are the New Women, and I was surprised to discover how much I had in common with them.

You may know that I trained as a nurse and a midwife after my sister died in childbirth. This was partly in rebellion against my parents, whom I blamed for my sister’s death, but also because I wanted to do something meaningful with my life. Then I met a handsome young doctor, Tom Brandt, and became his wife. Tom’s murder three years later shattered my perfect life, however, and I was grateful I had a valuable skill I could use to support myself, unlike so many widows who found themselves destitute. Now a whole generation of women were choosing to have a career instead of counting on finding a husband to support them.

Malloy and I learned a lot about these New Women and the world of academia. Abigail had forged some strong relationships at the college, but she had also made some dangerous enemies. Malloy and I needed all our training and a little help from Gino to uncover all of her secrets and bring her killer to justice.

Murder In Morningside Heights is the 19th book in the Gaslight Mystery Series, published by Berkley Prime Crime, May 2016

In the latest from the bestselling author of Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue, former police sergeant Frank Malloy and his wife adjust to life in New York high society as they investigate a death in the field of higher learning. . .

After spending his first few weeks as a private detective by investigating infidelities of the wealthy, Frank has a more serious case at hand.

Abigail Northrup of Tarrytown, New York, was her parents’ pride and joy. After graduating from a prestigious women’s college in Morningside Heights, she took a job there as an instructor. She also joined the ranks of the New Women, ladies planning for a life without a husband in which they make their own decisions and make a difference in the world. Unfortunately, her murder ended all that.

When the police declare the incident a random attack and refuse to investigate further, Abigail’s parents request Frank’s help. Of course, he’ll need Sarah’s assistance as she’s more familiar with the world of academia, and it will be far easier for her to interview the lady professors. Yet difficulties arise as they learn that Miss Northrup may have been an exemplary student and teacher, but she lived in a world of secrets and lies. . .

I have followed the tale of Sarah Brandt and Officer Malloy from their first adventure and am looking very much forward to their first adventure as a married couple. I have been trying to gather all books in the series, one copy at a time from inexpensive sources such as thrift stores and library sales because of finances, and having a signed hardcover copy of their latest murder mystery would be the star of my collection! Thanks to Victoria Thompson for writing series well-worth reading…over and over!! 🙂

The wonderful thing about discovering a series with so many books is having such instant gratification going from one to the next. The downside is when you catch up and have to wait so long for the next installment — but always well worth it 🙂 Both my husband and I enjoy sharing in the adventures of Sarah and Malloy. We’re all caught up, and can’t wait to indulge our detecting fondness with Murder in Morningside Heights!

Victoria, have you lived in Indiana for more than 5 years? Have you participated in the Glick Indiana Authors award? I love this series. There’s a bunch of us who make sure the public library has enough copies so we don’t all do bodily harm to read the newest first. Thank you for the chance to win a copy for myself.

  45. This is one of the best historical series. It’s extraordinary that after so many books each new one is fresh and never boring. Thank you for the opportunity to maybe have a copy of my own. 51. Lillian Jackson

I am eager to read Murder in Morningside Heights, the the latest book in the wonderful Gaslight Mystery series. I want to see how Sarah and Frank adjust to married life and life as a wealthy couple. What I enjoy most about these books is all the details about that time period. The author does such a thorough job of researching and presenting how people–especially women–lived and the manners and social demands and restrictions. I get so much from reading this series: mystery, romance, history, and suspense. Great job! I hope I win the autographed copy.

  52. Joan Mcmahon

I heard about this book coming out and put it on hold at the library. I was 1st for it, read it and got it to the next in line in 4 days. All the books are so great at sharing NYC in the mid 1800s. Love the characters!

  61. I was looking for a new mystery writer and happened on Victoria Thompson and her last book, “Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue.” I was hooked and to learn more about Sarah Malloy and her mystery-solving adventures. I went back and read the first book in the series, “Murder on Astor Place,” and have read in order each Sarah Malloy mystery to date. I’m waiting for the “Murder on Morningside Heights” book, which I’ve ordered. But, I would love to have a signed copy.

  70. Laura Galbo

I love the Gaslight Series. I’ve read every single book!! I pass my finished books along to friends, we have a mini book club discussing each. Ms.Thompson has done a great job in expanding the character’s role in each novel. Each book although part of a series can ‘stand alone’.
I’d love an autographed copy of Murder In Morningside Heights.

  71. Thank you so much. I can’t wait to read it.

  72. This sounds like a very good book!

  75. Kathleen Gilbert

I love, love Victoria Thompson and this series! I’m starting this book today. All the books in this series have been great. The story line has developed just as I wished for this charming family that grabbed my heart right from the beginning. 80. Nanci Kryzak

I read Murder in Morningside Heights on the day it was released….start to finish. It is as riveting as every other book in the series, as expected. The characters are so multidimensional, and even those who are less than favorites still evoke depths of feeling as their stories unfold. Victoria Thompson is a treasure, and her books will be passed down through generations. I’ve loved them all.

  81. wendynewcomb

This sounds like an interesting read, thank you for the chance to win a copy.

  82. Karen Hansen

I have never read this series and would love to. Thanks for the chance .

  83. I have enjoyed each of your previous books. I particularly like the depth of detail you include. It has given me a view of life in that period that I had not previously had. I also like the fact that your story lines avoid the coarse language and sexual explicitness of so many modern mystery writers. You do for New York what Anne Perry does for Victorian and Edwardian England. I’m looking forward to this latest tale.

  84. Alice Montgomery

I have read many of your books, but the “Gaslight Series” is my favorite. I have read them all in sequence. My problem is that I read faster than you write them and I’ll start off waiting for the paper back, but end up going ahead and get the hardback. So, if I happened to win a copy that would be a plus.

  85. Have not read the series yet – on my to read list now. Thanks

  86. Sounds like an interesting series – love books set in NYC. On my to read list now.

  99. I just finished Murder on Amsterdam Ave and have ordered Murder on St Nicholas Ave. Have loved this series from the very start. My Mom was born in NYC in 1901 and she and her mother filled me with turn of the century stories about The City in which I grew up. It is wonderful to revisit the time and place those two ladies described for me now that they are gone and I am in my 70’s!

  100. Just finished Murder on Amsterdam Ave and have ordered Murder on St Nicholas Ave. Have loved the series from the very start. My Mom was born in NYC in 1901 and she and my Grandmother told me many stories about early days in The City, as we always called it. I love revisiting the time and place they described as I was growing up in the 50’s-60’s in a place very changed but still inhabited by the buildings and streets of the past. Besides the setting, the characters are like family now and I look forward to the new house and living arrangements of the combined Malloy and Brandt families now that Sarah and Malloy are married.

    • OOPs, I didn’t realize my comment under Katherine P was accepted, it didn’t show up on the stream so I reposted as Sootycat–so sorry–didn’t mean to enter twice!

  103. I found the Gaslight Series in 2011 when I was dealing with chemo and radiation therapy. From that point on, I was hooked and never looked back. Being born and raised in NYC, this particular series has a special meaning for me. The third avenue El was still in operation when I was born! Thank you for allowing me to escape my reality into this world of yesteryear, at least for a little while.

  104. Melinda Vann

Always looking forward to another adventure for Sarah and crew!!

  105. I love this series. It reminds me of my family’s roots in New York. I’d love a chance to win.

  106. Renee Wheeler

I love this series, and this newest book was, as usual, a terrific read. The mysteries are excellent but they are almost secondary for me. I enjoy this series with its likeable characters and clever, believable plots. While each book is a peek at society at that place and during that time, underlying each story is the realization that basic human nature hasn’t changed all that much over the years. Each satisfying ending is like saying goodbye to friends, while already looking forward to their next visit.

  170. I’ve only recently discovered this series. I didn’t realize there were so many books! That’s most definitely a great thing! I love series that are about characters, but do NOT really require one to begin reading with the very first book; I also love mysteries. These books are perfect. Plus, the author has a small, spoiled dog. I knew I had found a great author!! 🙂

  178. I am totally hooked on your Gaslight Mysteries. So much fun to read and just enjoy.
When a book can make me laugh and even have a tear, and fear for the characters when they get in trouble, it is always worth a read.
God bless and thanks for sharing your talents as an author.

I’ve only finished one book in the series but own others to read. I like the hardcovers best (better print size) and have quite a few. The earliest ones are only in paperback. Like Susanne, I’ve acquired them used.
