Good day. The year is 1890 and my home is in Bath, England. My name is Lady Amy Lovell. I am a murder mystery author writing under the pseudonym of E. D. Burton since my father was scandalized when I showed him my first manuscript and contract. Since women have so few rights, I had to gain father’s approval to sign the contracts. So, a pseudonym it is.

I own the most adorable dog named Persephone, a white Pomeranian. I might mention that she has no tail. But I never tell her because I don’t want to hurt her feelings.

One of my favorite things is a wonderful mystery book club where another member, Lord Wethington has become a close friend. He is William to me, since together we solved a murder where I was the main suspect. I must say writing about murder is much easier than trying to solve a real murder where the police focus is on you!

My days are pretty simple. I live with my Aunt Margaret who is also unmarried—and happy about it—my dog, and our limited staff. I spend part of my day writing and another part, that I do not enjoy so much, calling on friends for tea. Listening to gossiping women can be trying, except when you are attempting to solve a murder, then they come in handy.

I was surprised and distressed one evening to find my ex-fiancé lying dead on my library floor with a very large, very ugly knife sticking out of his chest. And that, friends, is the only reason why the police attempted to lay the blame for Mr. St. Vincent’s demise on me. Honestly, that tie was so loose I wouldn’t even use it in one of my fictional murders.

Thankfully, my friend William stepped up to help me find the real culprit. He is a wonderful man, and a true friend. A friend. Just a friend. Honest.

A Study in Murder is the first book in the NEW “Victorian Book Club” mystery series, released May 12, 2020.

A mystery author is charged with murder–and the plot thickens faster than anyone can turn the pages–in USA Today bestselling author Callie Hutton’s new series debut, perfect for fans of Rhys Bowen and Ellery Adams.

Bath, England, 1890. Mystery author Lady Amy Lovell receives an anonymous letter containing shocking news: her fiancé, Mr. Ronald St. Vincent, has been dabbling in something illegal, which causes her to promptly break their engagement.

Two evenings later, as Lady Amy awaits a visit from Lord William Wethington, fellow member of the Bath Mystery Book Club, her former fiancé makes an unexpected and most unwelcome appearance at her house. She promptly sends him to the library to cool his heels but later discovers the room seemingly empty–until she stumbles upon a dead Mr. St. Vincent with a knife in his chest.

Lord Wethington arrives to find Lady Amy screaming and sends for the police, but the Bobbies immediately assume that she is the killer. Desperate to clear her name, Lady Amy and Lord Wethington launch their own investigation–and stir up a hornet’s nest of suspects, from the gardener who served time in prison for murder to a vengeful woman who was spurned by St. Vincent before he proposed to Lady Amy.

Can they close the book on the case before the real killer gets away with murder?
