Once upon a time, my life was relatively simple.

I would wake up around six a.m., nurse what headache was left from the martini’s I’d had the night before, check my phone for any indicative pictures my friends may have taken, then head out for my morning run. I was pretty content at my job at the paper. I got to uncover bad guys and expose unknown criminals, how badass is that? And even though it was more to check off a task from my personal bucket list than gain global recognition, I also published a book on a similar subject. That was pretty badass too, I guess.

Then one day, I met a woman who would change my life forever. And not in the good way one hopes for either.

She strolled into my office, demanding to take a meeting with me first thing on a Monday morning, and wasn’t taking no for an answer. It was a bad day already, the investigative piece I’d been working on was published in Sunday’s paper, and not everyone was thrilled about it. In fact, it took me a while to sort through all the hate mail. Oh well. If you don’t want to get called out on the stupid stuff you do, you probably shouldn’t be doing it. But I digress…My friend and co-worker Kylie finally promised me more martini’s if I’d meet with this person. So I did. I’m a sucker for a good martini and fun company, I guess.

Looking back, that was probably the worst mistake I’ve ever made.

Nothing has been the same since. The woman was all doom and gloom in the meeting. Then a day or so later, she turns up dead – just as she’d predicted – and my world began spiraling out of control. Following a hunch, I wanted to see if her promise of a story actually led anywhere, it was certainly juicy enough. It lead somewhere all right – it led me and my friends into some of the worst situations you could possibly imagine. Movie caliber drama. Discoveries about private clubs, faked deaths, murder cover-ups and all sorts of other things I’d been naïve to.

The worst part of it is, we didn’t all make it out alive. And those of us who did? We’ve never really been the same since.

Meet the author
Renee’ Novelle is Preceded by a long line of published family members, including Pulitzer Prize nominated author and Poet Laureate of Kentucky Jesse Stuart.

As a child, Novelle was already gaining recognition for several of her works, and in her formative years, she continued this trend by earning local awards for her short stories and poems.

Inspired to cultivate her talent, Novelle pursued freelance journalism and has found placement of 75 of her pieces in both online and print publications since 2008. Additionally, she has written multiple screenplays, and contributed her savvy, effective writing style to many non-profit and for profit organizations.
