Hi, I’m Marla Vail. I’m excited to announce the debut of my first cookbook. You might ask why I—a hairstylist—would write a book titled A Bad Hair Day Cookbook? Basically, I love to cook. I enjoy working with food and experimenting with new dishes when I have time between client appointments and crime solving. Picking up a spatula instead of a comb can serve as a creative outlet, especially when I get to eat the results.
It’s gratifying when my husband, Detective Dalton Vail, or his teenage daughter, Brianna, compliments my efforts. Not all of my creations turn out so good, but that’s part of the process. You can forget about your worries when you’re busy in the kitchen. The aroma of garlic and onions sizzling in oil or a cake baking in the oven can bring back memories of your own early years and provide new memories for your loved ones.
Cooking is an eggcellent way to wear off stress because you doughnut have to think about anything else except which ingredients to use next. As a sleuth, I have to be methodical about my approach to hunting down clues, and you need to do the same in the kitchen. My recipes are easy to follow and will save you time. You’ll find my favorite dishes from appetizers to desserts inside the pages of this cookbook. Your bad hair day troubles will evaporate when you taste the lip-smacking new meals made by your own hands. So plan to whisk away your worries and whip up some new favorites of your own with A Bad Hair Day Cookbook.

I like to make anything Italian, lasagna, manicotti, stuffed shells and spaghetti! Cannot wait for my cookbook to arrive!
Eggplant Parmesan is my favorite Italian dish. We always order it when we dine out and I have a really good recipe for it in my cookbook. Eggplant Rollatini is a close second. You might also like my Spaghetti Pie and Spinach Stuffed Shells.
I love to make stuffed peppers which is my go to meal anytime of the year. Thanks for the chance.
Stuffed peppers can be a hearty meal. These days I cheat and buy them ready-made at Costco. I’ll bet your recipe is good.
One of the first dishes I ever tried was fettuccine Alfredo. I still make it from time to time.
Jim, I like Fettuccini Alfredo but my husband prefers pastas with tomato sauce.
I like pasta, pizza, desserts, casseroles, just about anything. I like to try new recipes, and the ones found in mystery series are the best!
I like to find recipes in mysteries, too. When an author describes food or the heroine cooking, it makes me want the recipe.
I’m not a cook. However, I enjoy watching cooking shows….go figure!!!!
I guess u like watching others cook…lol…
Thank you for the giveaway..
I like to watch live cooking demos but don’t have time to watch the TV shows. Besides, at a live event, you get to taste the food.
I’ve added this cookbook to my Amazon list and hope to actually order it in a month or so. I own a number of author and author group cookbooks and enjoy trying the recipes.
I hope you’ll like this one, Nora-Adrienne! I think you’ll like the article my mother wrote in the back of the book, too.
Looking forward to owning this book. I’m sure it is a way to expand my meal repertoire beyond Jell-O in a Can .
The recipes are fairly easy, Debra. I’m sure you’ll find something that appeals to your tastes. It’s meant for busy home cooks who want good food that doesn’t take long to make.
I really don’t have a favorite but I guess I would say desserts.

Lots of desserts in this cookbook. The coconut fudge pie was featured in Trimmed to Death, my latest Bad Hair Day Mystery. But you’ll have many to choose from in the cookbook, such as fruit desserts like Blueberry Crumble to spirited treats like Wine Cake.
Being originally from Louisiana, I like cooking Cajun. I also like trying my hand at new dishes, especially casseroles and desserts.
I love regional cuisine and remember fondly our visits to New Orleans and Louisiana. I took a cooking class at New Orleans and altered the jambalaya recipe for my own tastes. And I’m all for casseroles that provide leftovers for a few days.
In the winter – now – I love to make homemade soups.
I just made a zucchini dill soup that was delicious. The recipe is on my website but you’ll find more soup recipes in the cookbook. The vegetable bean soup was one I’d inherited from my mother, except she used beef marrow bones.
I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes. My hubby is a vegetarian so I replace the meat with a veggie burger or tofu substitute. I also cook for work potlucks and need new ideas, so am looking forward to Marla’s cookbook!
I think you’ll find some recipes for potlucks. I have to bring one next month to our Friends of the Library holiday meeting. My Chicken Spaghetti casserole comes to mind for a hot dish, or the Tuna Spaghetti Salad for a cold dish. For a vegetarian one, the Eggplant Tomato dish might work.
I don’t have one particular food I like to make. I’m an experimenter. 🙂 I enjoy finding interesting recipes and tweaking the crap out of them to make them cheaper to make and kosher. 🙂 That’s my happy place. 🙂
I agree. I’m always tweaking recipes and making them my own. We can never have enough good things to eat, right?
I love to cook and am always on the lookout for new recipes. Depends on my mood and time if I want fast and easy or complicated and challenging. I have been making homemade pizza every Sunday longer than I can remember. I enjoy the way Marla’s commitment to feeding her family and friends healthy and interesting foods is woven into each story.
Congrats on the new book, Marla and Nancy!
Thanks so much, Sally. We are hoping our readers enjoy the cookbook and our commentary. It was fun to write and gave us an incentive to experiment in the kitchen!
I am excited for a cookbook in this series. Looking forward to making some of the recipes.
I hope you find some recipes you like, Debbie. I tried to include something for everyone.
I’m one of those people who love to just read a cookbook, lol. This one looks like a winner!
Nancy, I hope you’ll enjoy reading through my cookbook. I like cookbooks, too, and have more on my shelves than I’ll ever be able to read. But they’re also a memory from places I’ve visited as well as the standard categories.
I like making pork schnitzel and roasted vegetables. I also enjoy baking. I’m always looking for good and easy recipes.
Quick and easy is what appeals to me, too, Dianne. Can’t say that I’ve had pork schnitzel but I do like veal schnitzel. There’s a Viennese restaurant near here that serves it. Hope you’ll check out my cake recipes since you like baking.
I love to cook vegetable casseroles.
Anything with vegetables can only be healthy, right? One of my favorites to use in casseroles is eggplant.
This sounds like a fun cookbook! Congrats, Nancy.
Thanks for stopping by, Jacqueline!
Today it’s fish chowder with cod and salmon.
That sounds like a good soup for cooler weather.
I just know there are some fabulous recipes in here.
Let me know if you try any of them, Marilyn!
I have a broccoli salad that I always take as a dish and everybody loves it!
A broccoli salad sounds like a healthy contribution.
I’m sure it will be an awesome read and one for the keeper shelf. Looking forward to it.
Thanks so much, Maggie. I hope you like the cookbook from Marla’s viewpoint.
Meat loaf. Always experimenting with various ingredients to make a tasty loaf.
Meat loaf is a favorite in our family. I’ll make it either with lean ground beef or a mixture of lean ground beef and ground turkey.
I like to make soup when the temperatures turn cold. I also make steamers which are a favorite with my family. A steamer is what most places call a sloppy joe. Steamer is definitely a regional name.
Yes, that’s the first I’ve heard the term “steamer.” I love soups in cold weather, too.
I love spinach, broccoli, and many other quiches! Also, bean soup, split pea soup and mixed vegetable soups! Chili too! Banana Bread & Pumpkin Bread are also fun to bake this time of year. So many wonderful things to cook/eat!
Yes, indeed, there are too many wonderful things to eat this time of year. Makes it difficult to keep the weight down, especially when it gets colder outside and I turn into a slug.
I love to make soups, stews, and anything Italian.
Those all sound like good choices for winter evenings.
I like easy recipes. But yummy too. I have a bad back and can’t stand for more than a few minutes at a time so the easier the better. I have made recipes from some of the books I’ve read. Muffins and a quiche that I can think of off of the top of my head. They were so good.
I like to serve quiches for breakfast or for lunch. There’s usually enough left over for the next day, too.
I love cookie and casserole dishes.
I love casseroles, too, because then you have leftovers – my favorite meal!
For me it’s my comfort food–mashed potatoes!!
Mashed potatoes go with just about anything, but they can add calories to a diet. I’ll usually choose rice over potatoes.
chili
Chili is always a favorite on a cold winter day.
I love cooking and baking. I make a wide variety of dishes from baklava to grilled cheese and pretty much everything in between. One of my favorite dishes is lasagna, a recipe I made, that satisfied even the pickiest of eaters!
I want to come eat in your kitchen, Corissa!
I am a plain Cook more like Salmon Patties or deviled eggs but I do interchange and add my own stuff…I use oatmeal as a mix instead of bread with meat loaf etc.
Thank you for the chance.
Marilyn ewatvess@yahoo.com
You just reminded me about the oatmeal instead of bread crumbs in meatloaf. That’s a healthier alternative. Salmon patties (I call them croquettes) are in my cookbook. They’re one of our favorite meals.
