The Tuesday That Changed Everything
This past year, I’ve come to find that being widowed is like being on a permanent solo vacation—except I didn’t book this trip and the tour guide’s nowhere to be found. At least that’s how it feels to me: stuck and lost. That’s part of the reason I left Detroit to live with my father-in-law, Mac, in Sculpin Bay village on Lake Superior. It’s an easy, slow pace here, picturesque, and peaceful—a good place to raise Rose, my five-year-old daughter. She adores her grandpa Mac, and being here has helped both of us heal.
But never would I have guessed that in a town this quiet, things could go so sideways.
It started Tuesday. I was walking out by the barn, my mind ticking off my to-do list for the day when a flash of color caught my eye. I stepped closer, and my heart stopped. There, behind a pile of old wood, was the body of a woman. Soon, the local sheriff arrived, and then another law officer—a special agent from the U.S. Parks Service, Agent Nolan Shea. The deceased woman in our barn was connected to a cold case crime that occurred on Isle Royal, a National Park on a remote wilderness island across the bay from our village. Agent Shea was assigned to investigate both the woman’s death and the cold case. It didn’t take long before he found evidence that linked my late husband, Ben, to the victim from Isle Royale.
Now, my small, safe world has become a lot more complicated, and Agent Shea is at the center of my troubles. I’ve been thrust into a twisted narrative, forced to defend my deceased husband’s reputation—even as evidence mounts. But the more I discover, the more I question Ben’s innocence. And in the process, I’ve uncovered buried secrets I was never supposed to find.
Now, I’m not just trying to understand my husband’s past: I’m trying to survive it. Sculpin Bay was supposed to be a haven for me and Rose, but now we’re in the middle of something dark and dangerous—a threat to both our lives— and Agent Shea is my only ally in a story that is quickly spiraling out of control.
