Hi Everyone!
It’s Beck O’Rourke checking in from Beach Reads bookstore and café in sunny Manatee Beach, Florida. I’ve been busy today selling lots of paperbacks to beachgoers and helping out Grammy in the café. It’s spring break down here so we have more customers than usual. The college kids really love our specialty coffees and scones in the morning as well as a nice cool lemonade after an afternoon on the beach.
Now that things are thinning out, it’s my turn for a little beach time myself. The Atlantic is just across the street behind the Sandpiper oceanfront restaurant. I’m taking my Great Dane Coquina along. She loves the beach and the kids love her, although a lot of the little boys seem to think she’s a horse and try to ride her.
Coquina and I are heading for my sister Lizzie’s lifeguard stand to keep her company—not that she really needs it. She nineteen and gorgeous, so the surfer boys flock to her. For the most part she pretty much ignores them, though she does seem to have a new boyfriend every week.
It’s a little tough being her sister sometimes. Besides being beautiful, she’s ten years younger, incredibly athletic, and extremely outgoing. Everything I’m not. She’s always on me to exercise more because I prefer spending my free time curled up with a good book. Now she’s shamed me into taking tennis lessons, which I absolutely hate.
One good thing though—well, I guess I shouldn’t really call it a good thing—is that there’s a murder to investigate at the ritzy racquet club where a friend got us in to take the lessons. And do I like investigating murders! I’ve read so many mysteries growing up in the bookstore that I’m actually very good at it. I’ve already solved a couple of high-profile cases in our little town. This time, one of the tennis pros at the club was run down by a hit-and-run driver. And believe me, it was no accident.
Oh, and the best part about investigating crimes in Manatee Beach is that I get to spend time with my favorite police detective, the very handsome Devon Mathis. We met in a criminology course back when I was a freshman in college and wanted nothing more out of life than to become a detective. But all that testosterone in my major classes scared me away. I was so shy back then. Still am, really. I’m still kicking myself for wimping out and changing my major to English.
Devon doesn’t really like me snooping around on his cases. He gets kind of cranky about it. But I can’t help myself. As much as I like Devon (and I think he might feel the same way about me), my passion for detective work could be a dealbreaker. Sometimes I wonder where it’s all going to end. Will I have to give up one passion for the other?

Beck O’Rourke’s younger sister Lizzie has cajoled her into taking tennis lessons in the middle of the summer at a ritzy racquet club in South Florida.
Unathletic Beck suffers not only from the heat but from her snooty classmates who are more interested in the handsome tennis pros than learning how to hit a backhand. On the upside, Beck has made a new friend at the tennis club who turns out to be one of the world’s top-ranked tennis stars.
But things get serious when one of the racquet club’s pros is killed by a hit-and-run driver. Beck takes advantage of her inside knowledge of the tennis club to try to help handsome police detective Devon Mathis catch the killer.
