Sometimes the best way to know a person is by asking questions, where you can learn more about what makes them tick. Let’s see what Callie has to say.
What is your name?
– – Callie Valentine Jones
How old are you?
– – The last birthday I celebrated was number 37, and I’ll not admit to a day more.
What is your profession?
– – I own Hair.Net, the best little beauty shop in northeast Mississippi. Folks around here call it the Mooreville Riviera.
Do you have a significant other?
– – After being kidnapped on the very day of my renewal vows, I’m thrilled to say that I’m happily re-wed. Might I add, Mama thinks her son-law walks on water.
What is his name?
– – Jack Jones
What is his profession?
– – Jack’s the best undercover agent the Company has. His code name is Black Panther.
Any children?
– – Hmmm. Currently, we don’t have any cute little Joneses running around, but you might want to stay tuned!
Do you have any sibling(s)?
– – I’m an only child. Mama claims any more like me would put her in the grave.
Cats, dogs or other pets?
– – Though I have Hoyt, the cocker spaniel and seven rescued cats, Elvis rules the roost around here. He’s the cutest little Bassett hound you ever saw, and he’s got the biggest attitude this side of the Mississippi. In fact, he thinks he’s the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll reincarnated.
What town do you live in?
– – Mooreville, Mississippi, population 652 and growing
Do you rent or own?
– – Own
House or building complex?
– – My house is this darling little white clapboard country cottage with a wrap-around front porch.
What is your favorite spot in your house?
– – My front porch swing. It can sit there sipping a big glass of iced tea and see everything that goes on in the neighborhood.
Who is your best friend?
– – Lovie Valentine is my best friend, my cousin, my cohort in crime.
Amateur sleuth or professional?
– – Lovie and I fell accidentally into the sleuthing business when a body came up missing from Uncle Charlie’s Eternal Rest Funeral Home and we had to chase it all the way to Las Vegas. We thought that caper was a one-time thing. Major mistake! We land in trouble with depressing regularity.
Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
– – It’s Lovie Valentine, and sometimes Mama and Fayrene.
Favorite meal?
– – Lobster with drawn butter.
Favorite dessert?
– – Anything chocolate, particularly if Lovie makes it. She’s the best caterer in the state.
Favorite hobby?
– – I’m a runner, but I guess you could say my hobby is dishing out advice while I dispense beauty. Everybody tells me their problems at Hair.Net, and I try to fix every last one. I’m the Dr. Phil of the beauty circuit.
Favorite vacation spot?
– – Thank goodness I’m a woman who won’t break the bank with extravagant demands. I like nothing better than driving up to Memphis for a relaxing weekend with Jack at the Peabody Hotel. Both of us love listening to the great jazz on Beale Street, and I’ll have to say he’s not too shabby himself on that harmonica he keeps in his pocket.
Favorite color?
– – Pink! I reckon Elvis’ tastes have rubbed off on me.
Favorite author?
– – Give me a lazy day and a good book by the late, great Pat Conroy, and I’m in hog heaven.
Favorite sports team?
– – You’d think somebody with my athletic build and love of running would be a sports addict, but I’m not. Oh, I occasionally follow Mississippi State University in college sports, but that’s only to keep Jack happy.
Movies or Broadway?
– – I love both, but I’m a movie fiend. Lovie and I love film noir and frequently quote Humphrey Bogart.
Are you a morning or a night person?
– – Shoot, I have to be blasted out of bed. Put me out under the moon and stars and I’m revved up like that big old Hemi engine in my Dodge Ram.
In two to three sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
– – My typical day starts with a run through the neighborhood with Elvis, then a cozy breakfast with Jack followed by a shower (sometimes with my hunky husband). Then I’m off to Hair.Net where my day is usually turned upside down by everything from Mama’s emergencies to Lovie’s shenanigans to murder and mayhem. Let me tell you, when corpses keep turning up everywhere, life is never dull in Mooreville, Mississippi.
You can read about Callie in Elvis and the Blue Suede Bones, the 11th book in the “Southern Cousins” mystery series. The first book in the series is Elvis and The Dearly Departed.
The Valentine family has received BIG NEWS and everybody’s in a fever. Jack and Callie just want to make the world go away, but her mama, Ruby Nell, throws a garden party so she can spread the news. While Mooreville’s glitterati are chowing down on Cousin Lovie’s sausage balls, Elvis is in the flower beds digging up some old blue suede bones – human bones. Suspicious minds put the blame on Mama. If Callie wants to save her, it’s now or never. She goes into sleuth mode along with a whole lotta help from Lovie and everybody’s favorite crooning canine detective. Can Elvis and the Valentine gang catch a killer who’s got murder always on his mind before Ruby Nell ends up singing the jailhouse rock?

Johnna,I am delighted you enjoy this series! I’ve mapped out plans for the Valentines that will take this series far into the future. Thanks for stopping by the leave such a nice comment.
I love this series with the wacky character and the hound dog who thinks he is Elvis! Whenever I need a good laugh Callie and family are happy to oblige.
A fun author and a fun series!
Barbara, thank you for those wonderful comments! Writing the Elvis series is fun for me because I sit at my computer and laugh aloud at their antics. None of their crazy mishaps are planned. I’m a natural comedy writer, so I just put those zany characters on the page and go with the flow. I cut my teeth on comedy more than 30 years ago with my early romantic comedies, and I still love to write humor.
I really enjoyed the interview and the description of the book. Sounds like a great read. Adding to my TBR list.
Dianne, welcome to the wacky world of Elvis! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. I do hope you’ll enjoy the Southern Cousins mysteries.
