Not so long ago, my days started out with strong coffee and case files in Boston Homicide. Now, they begin with an overweight cat pawing me awake, followed by a spicy burger at my best friend, Grizzy’s, restaurant, and a whole lot of small town gossip from the Terrible Twins.

No, that’s not an Ohioan sports team. The Terrible Twins happen to be two – duh – seemingly innocuous old ladies, Mississippi and Virginia, who’ve practically talked my ears off the side of my head on more than one morning. Naturally, that doesn’t go down well without a cup of coffee.

That’s what life is like in Sleepy Creek, Ohio: gossip, burgers, and now. . . murder.

So, how did I get here? I messed up. Big time. I said the wrong thing, pushed the wrong buttons, went too far with a witness, and now I’m here on forced sabbatical, serving up burgers as a method of paying my dues to my best friend – I am staying in her house, after all.

This would all be fine if not for one simple fact which I cannot escape while I’m in this darn town: my mother was murdered here.

It’s the one case I long to solve, and the one case I can’t bear to touch because it brings back memories and nightmares.

“It’s simple,” Grizzy tells me, while she whips up a Double Choc Malt Shake for one of those Terrible Twins – who happens to be eavesdropping, of course, “all you’ve got to do is stay out of trouble. Keep your nose clean. Don’t get involved in anything you shouldn’t and you’ll be back in Boston solving cases in no time.”

If only it was that easy. As if investigating what really happened to my mother isn’t enough of a temptation for my overactive curious-streak, now I’ve got to deal with another problem.

A dead guy in my best friend’s back yard.

Loopy Paul was his name, and disdaining Grizzy’s burgers was his game.

Look, under usual circumstances I wouldn’t think about investigating this.

I know I’ll get in a truckload of trouble if I touch it. I’ve already got the handsome local detective’s attention since he’s figured I might want to get involved given my proximity to the murder, and my past.

But this is Griselda we’re talking about. She’s a suspect. She’s also the only person who was there for me after mom died.

If I let this one slide, there’s a good chance Grizzy will take the fall for something she didn’t do. And then, every day in Sleepy Creek will be nothin’ more than a heartache waiting to happen.

You can read more about Christie in The Fiesta Burger Murder, the first book in the NEW “Burger Bar” mystery series.

Boston Homicide Detective, Christie Watson, wants nothing less than to bury her head in the sand in her hometown, Sleepy Creek, Ohio. Placed on sabbatical for a little ‘over-enthusiasm,’ Chris has to stay out of trouble or risk losing her job for good, and Sleepy Creek, with its clapboard homes and peaceful milieu, seems just the place to do that. But returning to Sleepy Creek means facing the one cold case she’s never solved: her mother’s murder.

The past becomes the least of her worries, however, when a man is murdered in her best friend’s back yard. Griselda, awesome human being all-round and owner of the local Burger Bar – serving scrumptious delights like the Mexican Fiesta Burger – is the prime suspect. To make matters worse, the handsome detective in charge of the case won’t quit asking questions or drop the icy professionalism whenever Chris counters with her own.

Detective Watson can’t let this one slide – sabbatical or not, she won’t let her friend wind up behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit. Equipped with her cop skills, and that thirst for truth, she sets off to solve the murder before it’s too late.
