My day begins at 5:30 in the morning with either our four-year-old daughter, Grace, running into the darkened bedroom or Sweetie the cat standing on my chest until I can barely breathe. Grace and I then head downstairs while Greg, my husband, takes a shower and then brings the dogs outside for a walk. I make breakfast for my family, lunches for school, and then feed the pets. By now, Sweetie is shooting me green-eyed death glares.

After the twins catch the bus and Greg leaves for work, it’s time for Grace and me to head out. She’s especially excited today because it’s her first day of pre-school. I don’t know where the time goes. It seems like only yesterday that she was born, and I quit my career as a real estate agent to stay home with her.

Let me start out by saying that I hadn’t planned on returning to real estate. Like everything else in my life, I never saw it coming. I’d barely dropped Grace off at school when Jacques called. He’s my best friend and the owner of Forte Realty, where I was formerly employed. An old college roommate of mine, Pamela Hilton, thought that I was still in the business and wanted to know if I could list her home. I was torn over what to do, but Jacques assured me that it was fate. “What perfect timing! Why not make a few bucks while Grace is in school?” he said. With another daughter in college and the twins entering high school, we could use the extra money. Besides, it sounds like Pam needs help. She’s going through a messy divorce and her cheating husband is determined to see that she winds up with nothing. So, in a moment of weakness, I said yes.

I have a confession to make. When I first left the real estate world, it wasn’t only because of Grace’s birth. Jacques and I became embroiled in a murder investigation, and almost wound-up dead because of it. In order to save our lives, I had to kill someone. It’s something that I think about every day and will haunt me for the rest of my life, but I had no other choice.

Okay, back to the present. It didn’t even take a day before someone wanted to tour Pam’s home. It is a stellar housing market, after all. The couple has teenaged children on the swim team and were anxious to see the inground pool. It’s gorgeous, and there’s a lovely view of it from Pam’s bedroom. There was one problem, though.

Pam’s husband was in the pool, doing a dead man’s float.

I guess that after four years, not much has changed.
