I am thrilled to share with you the cover for the fourth book in the “Sally Solari” mystery series from Crooked Lane Books coming April 9, 2019.
Title: Murder From Scratch
Genre: Culinary Mystery
Author Website: Leslie Karst
Book Synopsis
Restaurateur Sally Solari’s cousin Evelyn may be blind, but she can see all too clearly that her chef mother’s death wasn’t an accidental overdose―she was murdered.
Santa Cruz restaurateur Sally Solari’s life is already boiling over as she deals with irate cooks and other staffing issues at the busy Gauguin restaurant. The rainy December weather isn’t cooling things down, either. So she’s steamed when her dad persuades her to take in Evelyn, her estranged blind cousin whose mother has just died of a drug overdose.
But Evelyn proves to be lots of fun and she’s a terrific cook. Back at the house she’d shared with her mom, Evelyn’s heightened sense of touch tells her that various objects―a bottle of cranberry juice, her grandfather’s jazz records―are out of place. She and her mom always kept things in the same place so Evelyn could find them. So she suspects that her mother’s death was neither accident nor suicide, no matter what the police believe.
The cousins’ sleuthing takes Sally and Evelyn into the world of macho commercial kitchens, and the cutthroat competitiveness that can flame up between chefs. In Leslie Karst’s scrumptious fourth Sally Solari mystery, Sally will have to chop a long list of suspects down to size or end up getting burned.

About the author
The daughter of a law professor and a potter, Leslie Karst learned early, during family dinner conversations, the value of both careful analysis and the arts—ideal ingredients for a mystery story. Putting this early education to good use, she now writes the Sally Solari Mysteries (Dying for a Taste, A Measure of Murder, Death al Fresco), a culinary series set in Santa Cruz, California. An ex-lawyer like her sleuth, Leslie also has degrees in English literature and the culinary arts.
All comments are welcomed.
My first job (besides babysitting) was in a restaurant.Fast food, though, so probably a different dynamic.
Sounds like a fun series. Thanks.
I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to work in a restaurant but I love reading chefs’ memoirs for some reason.
Great cover; reminds me of “On Top of Spaghetti” 😀
Lol, Amy–we had that record when I was a kid! (I think I might still have it…)
What a fun cover! (I do tend to judge a book by its cover.) And no, I have never wanted to work in a restaurant.)
I LOVE this cover!! It’s a great series. Congratulations, Leslie!
I love your new cover! And I have worked in restaurants before. My experiences were okay, although I’m not itching to go back.
It is indeed hard work. I wouldn’t want to do it, lol!
I can’t say I have ever wanted to work in a restaurant. But I do love books(especially mysteries )related anyway to food. This looks like a really fun read!
This sounds fascinating!!!
I worked at Dairy Queen when I was young, but never had any restaurant experience. However as a volunteer at a historical home in my town, I have served (and cooked) many fundraising dinner parties. While they were always fun to do, I was glad I never had to do it day in and day out for a living! That is really hard work!
Would truly love to receive a copy of this book. Thank you for the opportunity.
I have never worked in a restaurant and have a lot of respect for those who do. All caught up in this series and just waiting for this one, thanks for the giveaway entry! barbie17(at)gmail(dot)com
I’ve worked both fast food and at a sit-down restaurant as a waitress. I didn’t find either really appealing but they were jobs. I know personally what these employees face from bosses that are in it for the dollar and make you split your tips with all of the employees to the customer that are always disgruntled no matter what you do. On top of it carrying the trays loaded with platters of food can really do a lot of damage to the wrists and shoulders along with back. My recommendation for anyone working these jobs are good shoes and a wrist guard. Thanks for the opportunity to enter

You said it, Robin! Both waiting tables and line-cook work are SO hard on the body–and mind.
It is past time to start reading this series. Thanks for the giveaway.
My first job was working for McDonalds’s. I would come home so greasy. I love the cover. Thank you so much for this chance at the giveaway. pgenest57(at)aol(dot)com
I am so glad there is a new book in this series! While I have never worked in a restaurant, I know it is very hard work. I love to cook and bake at home, even that is hard work at times!
Thank you for the chance to win this book.

Sounds like an interesting series. Would love to read these
I love the cover! I worked in the office for family owned restaurants. That’s the closest I want to come to working in a restaurant.
This sounds very intriguing. A blind sleuthing partner is a very original twist.
Have I ever “wanted” to work in a restaurant. NO. Have I? I’m a retired waitress (20+ yrs) whose flat feet, arthritic knees & bad back can attest to what hard work it is. But, I did meet my hubby when we worked at a 50’s themed diner together in Panama City Beach. Married 27 yrs now.
My 1st job was working as a bus girl in a restaurant, it was real great I loved it. The owner sold out to 7 men who were from the Los Angeles area (Mob) so they fired everyone and brought in their own help. It was sad we all loved working there.

I have never worked in a restaurant and I really haven’t ever wanted to work in a restaurant. I haven’t read this series yet and I would really like to start the series.
Love the title. Fantastic plot.
What a great book, and ty for the giveaway. The only restaurant I’ve ever worked in was at ages 14 and 15 at a donut shop, since I couldn’t get a retail job yet. It was pretty fun, but there’s a danger in being around all of those free donuts! legallyblonde1961@yahoo.com
Have yet to read any in this series. I have read the synopsis on them and am looking forward to doing so. Hope this will be a start.
I have worked in a couple different restaurants. Both serving. Putting together desserts & salads.
At a gas station with food to make and sell. No restaurant. Thank you for the opportunity to own this book!
I worked my way through college in a fast food restaurant. My recommendation is to avoid it if at all possible. 😂
I like your new cover. I will check out your series.
Thank you, Dru and Leslie.
Eye-catching cover and good title from a series that would be new to me.
I haven’t really wanted to work in a restaurant; I am not a talented cook, and the work looks difficult and stressful. Maybe as a hostesa?
Love the cover!! No, I have never wanted to work in a restaurant, never worked in even a fast food one as a teen. I would enjoy just sitting in one tasting all the food though, lol. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love cooking series! As a teenager I worked at Ken’s Pizza for a year as a waitress. I always went home smelling like pizza. It was mostly fun at the time, ate lots of pizza & pasta back then, so much that after I quit working there I really didn’t eat much pizza for a few years. Not sure that these days I would want to do it again!
The cover goes with the title.
I love the cover.
I worked as a waitress after I graduated from high school as well as during college and grad school. It wasn’t a bad job for someone in their late teens and early 20’s, but I would not have wanted to be a career waitress as it is so physically demanding.
Thanks for the chance 😍🍯🐝😍 and Thanks for sharing this book with us
I have worked in a restaurant before I’d prefer other jobs though I really don’t like anything to do with cooking

When my husband and I owned a 9-hole golf course in our city where we lived at that time, my culinary background helped when we served many people food all day long in our clubhouse. My Mom also had a culinary background and she was mostly in charge of creating the breakfast meals and I created the lunches and light dinners and did all of the events. It was a very enjoyable time if my life.
Looking forward to this book!
Congrats on your release.
Thank you
Cynthia
Love this series!! I don’t know if I would be qualified to work in a restaurant, but I would love to be a baker in a gluten free bakery! Thanks for the chance to win.
Looking for a new series to check out & this one sounds great!
