Faith McClellan first appeared in Fear No Truth and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Faith.

What is your name?
Faith McClellan

How old are you?
36

What is your profession?
Texas Department of Public Safety, Rangers Division. Yes, the badge is still a star, and I wear boots to work.

Do you have a significant other?
No—dating takes time away from dead people who need my help.

Any children?
As in, small humans? Um. No.

Do you have any sibling(s)?
My older sister was my biggest fan and personal hero. She died when I was fourteen.

Do your parents live near you?
About an hour and a half drive south. Not that I’m inclined to make the drive often.

Who is your best friend?
Hmmm. That’s a good question. I don’t generally spend many waking hours away from work, so probably Graham—my old partner from my days at the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is a good man and a good friend.

Cats, dogs or other pets?
I’d just have to leave them alone all the time.

What town do you live in?
A small city in central Texas called Waco. If you watch HGTV, I bet you’ve heard of it.

House or building complex? Own or Rent?
I rent a cute house built from an actual Sears Kit in 1937—there are shipping stamps on the beams in my kitchen. It was called the Winona.

What is your favorite spot in your house?
My living room. I have my grandfather’s favorite chair and it even gets cool enough to use the fireplace a few times a year.

Favorite meal? Favorite dessert?
I’m a vegetarian, but any good Texas woman loves Tex Mex—nachos dripping in queso and piled high with fresh lettuce and tomato are my favorite. And I always have room for sopapillas and honey after dinner.

Favorite hobby?
Horses. I don’t get to the stables much these days, but I feel the most at peace when I’m riding.

Favorite color?
Yellow. It reminds me of my sister.

Favorite author?
I don’t get to read much but case files anymore. As a kid, I devoured Harry Potter and Nancy Drew.

Favorite vacation spot?
The beach. Just about any beach, really.

Favorite sports team?
Go Cowboys—I did grow up in Texas, y’all. It’s like, almost a state law.

Movies or Broadway?
Movies. Anything with 1990s Bruce Willis or Patrick Swayze is a safe bet.

Are you a morning or a night person?
Night. I do some of my best work in the wee hours.

Amateur sleuth or professional?
Professional.

Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
Mostly I work alone, but on big cases I work with Archie Baxter. Arch is the dad I wish I’d had (and my father’s former bodyguard), a veteran officer who has seen all the nonsense this job will throw at you and still wants to help people every day.

In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
One of the things I like about police work is that days are rarely typical. Like today—it’s Friday, I made an arrest in my latest murder case last night, and Graham brought me a rookie this afternoon who apparently needed a lesson in respecting women. But my lieutenant just called me out of the gym dangling a missing person’s case, which I’ve never worked before. I didn’t see it coming this morning, but it looks like my holiday weekend just got busy.

MISSING WOMAN.
A SADISTIC SERIAL KILLER.
AND A TEXAS RANGER RUNNING OUT OF TIME. . .

Shortly after a young mother mysteriously disappears, a serial killer begins leaving corpses and clues across the Texas Hill Country. Texas Ranger Faith McClellan and her mentor, veteran Ranger Archie Baxter, are assigned to the case.

But this killer is more clever—and sadistic—than any they’ve ever encountered, and the list of seemingly unrelated female victims is growing by the day—an attorney, a pastor, a stay-at-home mom. Each murder features a missing ring finger, severe head trauma, and a cryptic message carved into the corpse. But these gruesome calling cards provide more questions than answers, and with the best coroner in the state unable to identify the murder weapon, Faith and Archie are flying blind.

With the young mother still missing and a mounting body count, it’s up to Faith and Archie to solve the mystery. Before the killer strikes again. . .
