Frank Bennett sits down for a consolidated Q&A with dru’s book musings so that we can learn more about him. Are you ready? Let’s get to know Frank.

I’m Frank Bennett, police chief of Trout Run, NY, a little town in the High Peaks area of the Adirondack Mountains. I came here after a long career in the Kansas City police force. Recently widowed in my mid-fifties, I thought I’d wind down my days directing traffic and writing tickets in this little town. Well, it hasn’t worked out that way! I’ve solved quite a few murders and investigated some pretty diabolical con schemes since I’ve arrived here. My young partner, Earl Davis, and I are the complete Trout Run police force. We make a good pair because I have a lot of experience and intuition, while Earl possesses boundless patience. I’ve also found love since arriving in Trout Run—I married Penny, the town librarian, and we live in a cottage on the banks of Stony Creek with our overweight, lazy black cat, Yogi.

My best friend is Edwin Bates, owner of the Iron Eagle Inn. He’s a fabulous cook although I’m often suspicious of his more exotic creations. For example, I thought roasted butternut squash and farro salad sounded awful, but I tasted it to be polite. Turns out it was delicious! Usually, I prefer the meatloaf special at Malone’s Diner—a much safer option.

On an average day, I start off with coffee and a donut at The Store, then do the morning and afternoon patrols where I might help a lost hiker as I admire the mountain views. On Friday nights, Earl and I might need to break up a fight at the Mountainside Tavern. But when murder comes to Trout Run, I am relentless in tracking down clues. I won’t rest until justice has been restored in my little corner of paradise.

Never bite the hand that feeds you. . .
Unless that hand is trying to kill you.

Summertime in the Adirondacks: the fish are biting, the hikers are trekking, the tourists are spending. All is well in Police Chief Frank Bennett’s patch of paradise.

Until a mysterious guest disappears from Trout Run’s Mountain Vista Motel, leaving her bill paid for a month in advance.

And an equally mysterious benefactor shows up at the Trout Run Library, tempting the librarian—Frank’s wife, Penny—with a huge donation.

When Frank and Penny visit the wealthy vacation homeowner at his camp on a remote private lake, they encounter unexpected luxury…and shocking competitiveness. What was supposed to be a relaxing weekend ends in tragedy.

Once he returns to Trout Run, Frank realizes that he and the people he cares about are pawns in a game they don’t comprehend.

Can Frank settle the score? Or is this a contest where everyone loses?
