Clare Cosi first appeared in On What Grounds and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Clare.

What is your name?
Clare Cosi

How old are you?
39 and counting, and I shall remain “39 and counting” until my vintage approaches the age of my beloved mentor, dearest friend, and former mother-in-law. And then I shall refer to myself as an octogenarian.

What is your profession?
Coffeehouse manager, master roaster, and barista wrangler. Like a bartender, I also act as an unpaid therapist when the need arises (which it does, quite often). Oh, and I occasionally solve crimes—in an unofficial capacity, of course.

Do you have a significant other?
I’ve been divorced from Matt Allegro for over a decade. But he’s the father of the daughter we both dearly love, and he’s my partner in our Village Blend business of roasting and serving the very best coffee in New York City. Matt’s also the globetrotting coffee hunter I depend on to source and import premium beans, so I consider him my “significant other” in business. When it comes to romance, however, another man recently entered my life. . .

What is his name and profession?
Michael Ryan Francis Quinn is his name. He’s a detective lieutenant with the NYPD. He’s also the head of an elite squad of officers who investigate criminality behind drug overdoses, which is why they’ve been nicknamed the OD Squad. Mike and I actually met before his promotion, when my coffeehouse became a crime scene one morning. I walked into our Village Blend shop to find my hardest working barista—a young dancer who’d moved to New York to pursue her art—unconscious at the bottom of our basement stairs. The police ruled it an accident. I disagreed. The case became the subject of a bestselling mystery titled On What Grounds.

Any children?
My pride named Joy. She attended culinary school in Manhattan, apprenticed in Paris, and finally came back to us. Now she’s managing our second coffeehouse location in Washington DC’s Georgetown neighborhood. You can read more about the exciting opening of our DC shop in Dead To The Last Drop.

Who is your best friend?
That’s easy. For much of my adult life, my most trusted friend has been the owner of the Village Blend, French-born Blanche Dreyfus Allegro Dubois, known affectionately (and respectfully) around the Village as Madame. When I was pregnant, she clucked over me like a mother hen. When Joy was born, she was there to help me through nervous-mom syndrome. Even after her son and I divorced she remained my touchstone. Madame taught me everything I know about the coffee business, and she’s always been there for me whether I needed a shoulder to cry on or a buddy to laugh with. After so many years serving our community, she’s also a natural busybody (in a good way) and often helps me in my amateur sleuthing.

Cats, dogs or other pets?
I have two lively and loveable female felines. “Java,” with her coffee-bean-colored coat, has been my furry friend for years. Little white “Frothy” joined us one holiday season when I investigated the suspicious death of a popular charity Santa named Alf Glockner. You can read all about it in Holiday Grind.

What town do you live in?
Greenwich Village, New York. I just love it here. These tree-lined streets offer a much calmer pace than the rest of the city. And the neighborhood is endlessly fascinating with picturesque, historically preserved townhouses, quaint pubs, and cozy cafes that have intriguing stories to tell about the Village’s colorful past, and its enduring place in New York’s cultural history.

House or building complex? Own or rent?
As part of my deal with Madame to run the Village Blend, she’s given me the keys to the duplex apartment above it, rent free. Madame used to live there when she ran the shop. She’s furnished it beautifully with charming antiques and elegant touches. And the best part? Displayed on the walls (and packed into the attic) are hundreds of paintings, drawings, sketches and doodles from the many artists who frequented our landmark coffeehouse over the years.

What is your favorite spot in your house?
That’s easy: the kitchen! Growing up, I practically lived in my grandmother’s little Italian grocery, helping her run the shop. She and I also spent many happy hours together baking for her customers—fresh Italian breads and rolls, crunchy biscotti, and rustic cakes and cookies. Baking always lifts my spirits, and brings me back to those happy days with my nonna.

Favorite meal?
New York offers an impressive array of cuisines to sample, and I’ve stuffed myself with nearly all of them! But at heart, I’m a comfort food, spaghetti and meatballs kind of girl.

Favorite dessert?
I’d have to choose the “Mommy and Me” cookies that I baked countless times with my Joy when she was growing up. Every tender, chewy, caramelized bite of these delectable chocolate chip cookies brings back the best mother-daughter memories. For the recipe, turn to the appendix of Coffeehouse Mystery #16, Shot In The Dark.

Favorite hobby?
Eating. And cooking. (No surprise, right?!) To work off my hobby, I swim at the local YMCA—the McBurney branch, which is the very one featured in the Village People’s classic “YMCA” music video. Since I studied fine art in college, I also like to sketch, draw, and paint, though (honestly) these days I channel much of my creativity into the coffee business—hand-crafting coffee blends, drinks, and baked goods that will make my customers swoon.

Favorite color?
The glacial blue of Mike Quinn’s eyes. Yes, it sounds sappy, but if you saw that mesmerizing color, you’d understand.

Favorite vacation spot?
Kona, Hawaii. And all of Hawaii, really, which is not only a state with spectacular natural beauty, it also happens to be the only place in the USA that grows coffee!

Favorite sports team?
The Pittsburgh Steelers, even though I live in New York, I was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania, where the Steelers are practically part of the landscape. I even sleep in an oversized Steelers’ T-shirt.

Movies or Broadway?
Broadway because there is nothing like the energy and joy of live theater! One of my most loyal baristas, Tucker Burton, is also an actor and playwright here in New York. Lately he’s been directing children’s theater as well as lively cabaret nights at local clubs. You should see his shows. They’re always wonderfully entertaining!

Are you a morning or a night person?
That depends on the schedule at my shop. I love the quiet, pink-sky dawn in the Village, the smell of freshly brewing coffee, the bakery delivery at the back door—which I always sample (with the excuse of quality control, of course). But then I love the evenings, too. Late at night with the fire crackling in the hearth, the coffeehouse seems magical. As windows glow around the Village, and a brisk, salt breeze swirls in from the Atlantic, I’ll whip up a White Chocolate Mocha, top it with heavenly whipped cream, and sip in the satisfaction of a hard day’s work finally done.

Amateur sleuth or professional?
Amateur, absolutely. Mike once told me that I had what it took to be a great police detective, but that ship has sailed. Even if I could turn back the clock and enter the police academy, I would never enjoy negotiating the bureaucratic red tape and political mine field that Mike has to cope with on a daily basis. No, I prefer to help the people in my community (and the dedicated officers of the NYPD) in an *unofficial* capacity.

Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
That depends on the case. My quirky staff of baristas is always ready to pitch in when I need their help: Tucker, our resident Off-Broadway actor, has outfitted me many times with undercover disguises. Esther, an NYU grad student who runs Poetry Slams for city kids in our second floor lounge, is a natural snoop. Dante, a sweet-natured artist (and favorite of our younger female clientele), is always ready to lend a creative hand. And then there’s my octogenarian mentor, Madame, who never fails to become excited about a puzzling new case. “The game is afoot!” has become one of her favorite quotations.

In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
My typical days are always long—and sometimes a little crazy—but I don’t mind hard work or the challenge of controlling caffeinated chaos. It certainly keeps my life interesting. You can read more about Clare in Brewed Awakening, the 18th book in the “Coffeehouse Mystery” series, released December 3, 2019.

From Cleo Coyle, the New York Times bestselling author of Shot in the Dark and Dead Cold Brew, comes a delicious new entry in the “fun and gripping” (The Huffington Post) Coffeehouse Mysteries.

When coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi awakens on a bench in Washington Square Park, she has no idea she’s been missing for the past week, or that her friends and family have been frantic with worry. Now that she’s back, everyone is overjoyed, including a handsome NYPD detective who claims to be her fiancé. But to Mike Quinn’s crushing distress, Clare doesn’t remember him, or much of anything about the last decade of her life.

Clare’s missing memory is tied to a crime she witnessed. An acquaintance of Clare’s elegant employer–and fellow member of an exclusive Gotham circle known as “The Ladies Who Brunch”–invited Clare to her posh hotel to sample gourmet wedding cakes. The pair took a stroll after their indulgent tasting and, according to security camera footage, a masked figure snatched the hotel heiress at gunpoint with Clare looking on. Did the kidnapper take Clare, too? The camera went dark, just like Clare’s memory. Soon authorities grow suspicious. Is Clare really a victim? Or merely acting like one? Evidence is mounting that she set the woman up.

To clear her name, Clare must find a way to reclaim her memories and rescue the heiress before this high-stakes crime ends in tragedy. Otherwise, instead of walking down the aisle, Clare may find herself perp-walking to prison as an accomplice to kidnapping and murder.
