Gethsemane Brown first appeared in Murder in G Major and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Gethsemane.

My name is Gethsemane Brown.

I’m 38 years old.

I’m a professional classical musician. I play several instruments, primarily the violin. I also conduct. Right now, I’m working as Music Director at a boys’ school.

I’m happily single and child-free.

I have four siblings, two sisters and two brothers: Meribah, Sihloh, Zebulon, and Asher. I’m right in the middle.

My father’s deceased, my mother lives in Virginia.

I don’t have a best friend — I spent so many years traveling for my career, I didn’t stay in one place long enough to have a best friend. Since I moved to Dunmullach, I’ve become close to a few people, Frankie Grennan, a math teacher at the boys’ school where I work, Niall O’Reilly, an inspector with the Dunmullach Garda, and Eamon McCarthy, the famous composer who I idolized growing up. Well, technically, I’m friends with his ghost.

I live in Dunmullach, a small town in southwestern Ireland, near Cork.

I live in a cottage, the cottage Eamon lived in with his wife, Orla, before they were murdered. I rent it from his nephew, Billy McCarthy. My favorite spot in the house is the music room. I practice my violin there and often play duets with Eamon on the piano.

Is coffee a meal? I don’t have the best eating habits, a result of so many years on the road. Cooking ranks low in my skill set. I’ve become fond of pub food since moving to Dunmullach—I eat at the Mad Rabbit a lot. Shepherd’s pie and lamb stew are two of my favorite pub foods. My favorite dessert is bread pudding with salted caramel bourbon sauce.

My favorite hobby is also my profession— music. I also like baseball.

My favorite color is green.

My favorite author is Venus James, the true crime writer. I couldn’t stand her writing when I first read her—she wrote a dreadful, rumor-filled true crime book about the McCarthy murders—but after she helped me solve a mystery, I developed an appreciation for her work.

What’s a vacation? I travel for work. I’ve traveled all over the world, playing with various orchestras and performing solo. Every place I traveled to fascinated me, I can’t choose one favorite.

My favorite sports team doesn’t exist anymore—the Homestead Grays, a Negro League baseball team

Movies, definitely movies. Casablanca’s my favorite.

I’m a night person. Early mornings meet my definition of torture.

I’m an amateur sleuth. I sleuth with my ghostly roommate, Eamon.

Nothing in my life has been typical since I moved to Dunmullach not quite a year ago. The way my day goes depends on whether school’s in session. During the school year, I get up, have a cup of coffee, then head to St. Brennan’s for breakfast in the dining hall. Then the day is spent teaching music, planning lessons, and rehearsing with the honor’s orchestra. I usually stop by the pub after work then head home. During the summer, my schedule is more free-wheeling. I find gigs performing at festivals and other events and relax and enjoy the village in between gigs.

You can read about Gethsemane in Fatality in F, the fourth book in the “Gethsemane Brown” traditional mystery series, coming February 26, 2019.

Fresh from solving her third mystery, Gethsemane Brown’s ready to relax and enjoy her summer. Her plans include nothing more dangerous than performing in the opening ceremony of the annual rose and garden show and cheering on Frankie Grennan, who has entered his hybrid rose into the competition.

But when a mysterious stalker starts leaving Frankie floral bouquets as coded messages, Gethsemane fears a copycat may be planning to recreate the still-unsolved murders of the infamous Flower Shop Killer. Then Frankie’s main competitor in the rose show—and the reason his marriage failed—turns up dead in Frankie’s rose garden. Frankie takes first prize in the category of prime suspect.

So much for a relaxing summer.

As bodies start dropping like rose petals, Gethsemane must judge the other suspects and find the real killer. Or rose bushes won’t be the only things dead-headed in Dunmullach.
