Greetings from southern Indiana. My name is Grant Bird, and I’m the proud father of South Lick police lieutenant Buck Bird. But I’m still grieving the horrible murder of my sweet amour, Vi Perkell, a few days ago. It happened during the summer fireworks Friday night, under cover of darkness and noise.

So my day today will include musing, from the darkness of my world, about who wanted to kill her. I’m blind, you understand, have been for a number of years. But that doesn’t stop me from knitting away with the ladies in our assisted living residence, Jupiter Springs. It also doesn’t keep me from hearing and smelling things others might miss. I pay more attention to the other senses, what with not being able to see.

Something is certainly up with Vi’s children. I’ve heard them arguing in her room. I pray they were not involved in her death. Vi formerly owned a mystery bookstore called Aunt Agatha’s, and her business partner from that era seems up to no good, as well. And then there’s Nanette, and Pat, and, well, I’ll leave the detecting to those better trained for it than I.

The eerie thing is, my late wife was killed in an almost identical fashion to Vi decades ago. My poor boy lost his mama as a teenager. He’s aware of the copycat nature of the current homicide, of course.

But I’m also grateful for spunky Robbie Jordan. Land sakes, she has a keen mind for investigating. Why, Buck said she drove all the way down to Floyd’s Knob to talk with his granny, my mother-in-law Simone. The lady might be a hundred, but she has all her marbles, and remembers more about my wife’s death even than I.

Well, I’m off to the afternoon poker game with my fellow geezers. Enjoy your day, readers!

In South Lick, Indiana, fine foods and classic cookware can be found at Robbie Jordan’s Pans ’N Pancakes. Unfortunately, her country store also seems to stock up on murder . . .

Robbie and her new husband Abe O’Neill are enjoying a summer evening in the park with fellow townsfolk excited for some Friday night fireworks. In attendance are senior residents from Jupiter Springs Assisted Living including Roy Bird, father to South Lick’s very own Police Lieutenant Buck Bird. Despite his blindness, Roy is a member of his group home’s knitting circle, spending quality time with some lovely ladies.

But when the lightshow ends, one of the knitters who sat with Roy is found dead, a puncture wound in her neck. The poor woman’s death echoes that of Buck’s mother and Roy’s wife—an unsolved homicide. To help find the killer, Robbie’s going to have to untangle the knotty relationships deep in the victim’s past . . .
