Jazz Ramsey first appeared in The Scent of Murder and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Jazz.
What is your full name?
Jasmine Elizabeth Ramsey, but everyone (except my mom) calls me Jazz
How old are you?
28
What is your profession?
Administrative Assistant to the principal at St. Catherine’s Preparatory Academy, an exclusive all-girls school
Do you have a significant other?
Yup!
What is their name and profession?
Nick Kolesov is a Cleveland Police detective
Do you have any children?
No
Do you have any siblings?
Yes, two brothers, Hal and Owen, both of them are Cleveland firefighters. They’re both older than me and you know what that means. Older brothers can be bossy, and they like to butt into your personal business. Lucky for me, I love both these guys to the moon and back.
Are your parents nearby?
My dad, Michael Ramsey, was a firefighter who died in a suspicious fire a few years back. My mom, Claire, lives not too far away. She’s dating someone now and yes, it took me a while to get used to the idea. But I’ve learned to like Peter and more importantly, he makes my mom smile. There was a time I thought I’d never see her happy again.
Who is your best friend?
Sarah Carrington, the art teacher at St. Catherine’s. We’re not at all alike. Sarah’s a vegan and definitely a free spirit. I’m far more practical and down to earth. Yes, she turns up her nose when we go to dinner and I order something like a corned beef sandwich. But hey, give and take, that’s what friendships are all about.
Do you have any pets?
Absolutely! Wally, my Airedale puppy. I was without a dog for a while when my beloved golden retriever, Manny, died. But Nick gifted me with Wally and he is the dog of my heart! Sure, he’s stubborn like all Airedales are. But he’s smart and he’s funny. He’s eager to learn and sometimes eager to please!
What town do you live in?
Cleveland
Would you say you live in a small town or a big city?
Big city
Type of dwelling and do you own or rent?
I own a home in the artsy/trendy/hip/hot neighborhood of Tremont, not far from downtown. The house once belonged to my grandparents back in the day when Tremont was a blue-collar, working-class neighborhood. These days, young people with money have moved in and the neighborhood is a wonderful mix of art and music, clubs and restaurants. I love the working-class roots of the place.
What is your favorite spot in your home?
Front porch in the summer, where I can watch the world go by! Back yard all year long because that’s where I work on training Wally.
Favorite meal and dessert?
Nothing beats a good burger (shhh. . .don’t tell Sarah!). As for dessert, I try not to eat it, but who are we kidding! My mom’s cheesecake is fabulous.
Do you have any hobbies?
I’m not sure if I’d call it a hobby, a vocation, or an obsession. I train and handle cadaver dogs and I work with a team that includes HRD (Human Remains Detection) dogs and search and rescue dogs. We’re a volunteer organization that’s called in by authorities when they need help
What is your favorite vacation spot?
I’m so busy with the dogs, I never have time to vacation
What music do you listen to?
I’m pretty eclectic. A little country, a little pop. Wally and I do not like classical or jazz
Do you have a favorite book?
What, me read? I don’t have the time, the patience, or the attention span!
What is your idea of a really fun time?
Working with the dogs, nothing beats it.
If you were to write a memoir, what would you call it?
Hmmm how about “The Secrets of Bones.” Actually pretty appropriate, because that’s what the dogs and I are out to discover. We search for people who’ve gone missing and are presumed dead. Of course, once we find the deceased and I contact the authorities and write up my report of the scene, that’s where my involvement is supposed to end. But I keep getting sucked into cases. The first one (detailed in “The Scent of Murder”) involved a recent St. Catherine’s graduate whose body I found while training a dog. And now, in “The Secrets of Bones,” there’s a missing teacher . . . and bones in the attic of St. Catherine’s. It’s hard not to want to find answers, and justice.
Amateur or professional sleuth and whom do you work with?
Definitely amateur. I work with Wally and other cadaver dogs. Of course Nick doesn’t like me sticking my nose into cases, but we share theories and I share information with him. No way we’re partners when it comes to crime. Not by a long shot! But he’s coming around.
In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
A school day? Up early and over to St. Catherine’s which isn’t far from my home. I handle all the administrative stuff, all the big and little details that make the school run smoothly. After school, Wally and I do some training and take nice, long walks around the neighborhood. More training on the weekend, including every Sunday when I meet with my group and we train at (get this!) an abandoned amusement park that’s 40 minutes from home. It’s the perfect location because there are open areas where the dogs can do outdoor work and plenty of little buildings (like old popcorn stands) so the dogs can get urban search experience.
The Secrets of Bones is the second book in the “Jazz Ramsey” cozy mystery series, released May 5, 2020.
Second in a new series from national bestselling author Kylie Logan, The Secrets of Bones is a riveting mystery following Jazz Ramsey as she trains a cadaver dog.
Assembly Day at St. Catherine’s dawns bright and cloudless as professional woman gather from all around Ohio to talk to the schoolgirls about their careers ranging from medicine, to NASA, to yoga. Jazz Ramsey has also signed up to give the girls a taste of her lifelong passion: cadaver dog training. Her adorable new puppy Wally hasn’t been certified yet, so she borrows the fully-trained Gus from a friend and hides a few bones in the unused fourth floor of the school for him to find.
The girls are impressed when Gus easily finds the first bone, but then Gus heads confidently to a part of the floor where Jazz is sure no bones are hidden—at least not any that she’s put there. But Gus is a professional, and sure enough, behind a door that no one has opened in ages, is a human skeleton. Jazz recognizes the necklace the skeleton is wearing, and that it belonged to Bernadette Quinn, an ex-teacher at the school who’d quit her job abruptly one Christmas break. But now it seems Bernadette never left the school at all, and her hiding place makes it clear: this was murder.
Bernadette in life had been a difficult personality, and so there are a plethora of suspects inside the school and out of it. As Jazz gets closer to the truth she can’t help but wonder if someone might be dogging her footsteps. . .

Wow, what a slew of pen names! If I were writing, I am sure my characters would get confused as to why they were in a different book in a totally different genre! This is another new-to-me author (of every pen name and series.) I will be looking for this series by Kylie Logan as I can see the series will be right up my alley!
Thank you, Dru Ann, for such a lovely and informative review (as always.) 😉❤❤❤
