Setting up the food truck this morning, one thought keeps running through my mind. How do I get myself into these situations? Then I remembered how when Aunt Jackie griped at me for setting up the water bottles wrong. This was all her doing. God knows I love the woman, but at seventy plus she’s never heard of the phrase ‘Take it easy.’
I’m Jill Gardner and I own Coffee, Books, and More, here in South Cove, California. If you look east from where we’re standing toward town, you can see my roof of my house from here. I love the laid-back California lifestyle, at least when I get to relax. Running a small business in a tourist town can keep you on your toes. I can hear my boyfriend, Greg King, laughing right now. He thinks I’m always up in everyone’s business. I can’t help it if I’m curious and people tell me things. Besides, he has to admit, I have helped him solve a few murders.
Today, Coffee, Books, and More is having their first food truck trial on the beach. South Cove is sponsoring The Mission Walk, a 5k fun run/walk to support the Californian Mission Society. They came to me as the owner of the future South Cove Mission site and asked if I’d like to help. I didn’t realize what a zoo one of these events were. Of course, even if I had, I want to look like I’m supportive of the current missions and historical sites for the committee who’s reviewing my petition. Bureaucracy takes forever.
Thank God, Darla took on the majority of the scheduling and planning. She had to have been high off the success of the charity mystery theatre night when she said yes. Is it just me, or am I surrounded by over achievers?
Good thing I’m only in charge of setting up and tearing down the temporary coffee shop. That way, I can run the course too. All I need to do is finish cutting up this last cheesecake and I’m out of here.
Except why is Toby jogging up to the truck? He’s supposed to be helping Greg out with crowd control today. . .
You can read more about Jill in Killer Run, the 5th book in the “Tourist Trap” mystery series, published by Kensington. The first book in the series is Guidebook to Murder.
About Killer Run
Jill Gardner—owner of Coffee, Books, and More—has somehow been talked into sponsoring a 5k race along the beautiful California coast. The race is a fundraiser for the local preservation society—but not everyone is feeling so charitable. . .
The day of the race, everyone hits the ground running. . .until a local business owner stumbles over a very stationary body. The deceased is the vicious wife of the husband-and-wife team hired to promote the event—and the husband turns to Jill for help in clearing his name. But did he do it? Jill will have to be very careful, because this killer is ready to put her out of the running. . .forever!
