What’s it like when your brother is a super hero? Well, he’s not really a super hero. And he’s not really my brother, either. But close enough on both counts.
I’m Kathryn Scarlett. Yes, my mother must have been into Gone With the Wind. Most people call me Scarlett. Maybe names are destiny. People complain that I’m as fearless, independent, and dangerous as that Katie Scarlett O’Hara.
I own Scarlett Investigations, a high end private firm in Houston. And my brother?
You might have heard of him. Michael Flint.
Flint is the best heir hunter in the world. He can find anyone, anytime, anywhere. Dead or alive. The secret of his success? Sure, he’s got skills. But Flint simply doesn’t quit. Never.
As I said, Michael Flint’s not really my brother. We met twenty-six years ago, at the West Texas orphanage where we grew up. I was ten and he was eight and that seems like two lifetimes ago.
The Lazy M Ranch, Bette Maxwell’s boarding school for orphans like Flint and me, was as good a place as any for a couple of rowdy kids to grow up. The old ranch was dry and barren and the hot sun beat down on our heads every day. Everything within a twenty-mile radius was covered with dust inside and out, including us. We didn’t care about any of that. The Lazy M was home to us and it was a better home than a lot of kids have.
Bette was kind and she certainly tried to give us everything we needed, even though money was always scarce. I went to work for Uncle Sam at eighteen and never really looked back. Flint did the same when he joined the Marines two years later. We didn’t see Bette again for more than twenty-five years.
We both have regrets about that and other things.
I have a daughter. Madeline Scarlett. We call her Maddy. She’s seven and she’ll rule her own world one day. Not because she’s particularly brilliant or bossy or iron-willed, although there’s some of that. Because she’s persuasive. Very.
Maddy is the one who believes Flint is a super hero, and she persuades him to do whatever she wants. Resisting her iron will is futile. Believe me, I’m her mother. I should know.
Of course, Flint isn’t really a super hero, but he tries to live up to Maddy’s expectations. He doesn’t have kids, or a significant other. There have been women over the years. But they seem to drift away.
Flint says he hasn’t found “the one” yet and he’ll know her when he finds her. Seems to me he’s not really looking all that hard.
I guess you’d say Flint’s like any other brother, really. He helps me out at Scarlett Investigations when I need another operative on a tough case or his particular skill set. He watches Maddy if he’s in town. He’s reliable in his own way. Tough as nails, sure. But I know there are soft spots under the surface.
Flint takes on cases no one else will do. Thugs and thieves and villains of all sorts have tried to best him.
On Flint’s side? A knack for keeping himself alive, a hard-won moral code, and buried questions about his own family that drive everything he does.
What’s it like when your brother is a super hero? Annoying, aggravating, exhilarating, frightening, comforting.
Let me put it this way. If you’re in trouble, you want Michael Flint on your side. Trust me.
