When people hear my name, especially lately, the first response seems to be that I don’t look like a Dolores. I always ask, what does a Dolores look like? The standard reply is, like a grandmother. Which, I suppose, isn’t too far off the mark. Dolores is a family name, and I love it, but the truth is, I’m Lola. Dolores Falcón Cruz. . .Lola for short.

With a name like Lola, and with my love of salsa dancing, salsa eating (along with most other Mexican food, which is always at my fingertips since my family owns Abuelita’s, a Mexican restaurant in midtown Sacramento), and Salsa, my brindle boxer, I’m not what most people think of when they think private eye. Pero está bien. No es un problema. And it really is okay. I’m still a novice, learning from Manny Camacho. I have to prove myself.

And I have. I’ve had some big wins during my short time as a PI. The only thing that gets to me is when Sadie Metcalf questions my ability—which happens way too often. Way. Too. Often. She thinks she has me, pero ay caramba. I have her. In the form of chisme. Gossip. GOOD gossip. And not just gossip about her, but about her and. . .Manny. Maybe it’ll be leverage. I hope it’ll be leverage.

My daily life is pretty exciting, in my opinion. I work whatever case I’m on. I fill in at Abuelita’s when I need to. I see my family—I love every last one of them like they’re an extension of myself. And I hang out with Jack Callaghan.

Gracias a Dios for Jack Callaghan. That man. He is like no other.
