Party time!
I love a good party, particularly a surprise party. It’s the 10th anniversary of Bertie James coming to work at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library here on the Outer Banks, and the staff have decided to put on a big party to celebrate.
Bertie isn’t one for wanting a lot of fuss and attention, so we’re going to surprise her. Everyone is coming. Including the mayor, Connor O’Neil, and police officer Butch Greenblatt. Things have been a bit tense around here since I accidently made a date with both of them for the same time. And not just any date either, but the Mayor’s Ball with Connor and the grand opening of his brother’s restaurant with Butch.
Oops.
The problem is that I like them both, a lot. And they both seem to like me. Although lately I’ve been starting to become aware that I like one of them as a friend, and the other as. . . well, not just as a friend.
Anyway, it’s going to be a wonderful party. My cousin Josie is doing the catering, so you know the food is going to be great. I’ve heard she’s doing a cake that is going to blow everyone’s socks off.
Speaking of blows, the only thing that might spoil the party is the big storm, rapidly heading our way. It’s not expected to hit the Nags Head area for some time yet, so we should be able to get everyone on their way safely.
From the little apartment on the fourth floor of the lighthouse that I call my lighthouse aerie, I can see a long way out to sea. It’ll be fun to sit up there and watch the storm.
I sure hope the partygoers as well as ships at sea get to harbor safely before it hits. There is a reason this stretch of the coast is called the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
Reading Up A Storm is the third book in the Lighthouse Library mystery series, published by Obsidian, April 2016.
The national bestselling author of Booked for Trouble returns with another charming mystery set in the most literary lighthouse in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Misfortune blows into North Carolina’s Outer Banks when a dead body in a boat on the shore leaves local librarian Lucy Richardson racing to solve a strange new mystery. . .
After a successful party at Bodie Island’s Lighthouse Library, librarian Lucy Richardson is ready to curl up with her cat, Charles, and a good book. But her R and R is cut short when she notices some mysterious lights leading a small boat to crash into the coast.
The two shipwrecked seafarers survive the ordeal—but one of them shows up dead ashore a few days later. Lucy finds herself again roped into a murder investigation and navigating a sea of suspects, all of whom had motives to deep-six the deceased. And this time, she has a sinking feeling that finding the real killer won’t be so easy. . .

I love Vicki’s books and certainly wouldn’t miss Eva’s. A library in a lighthouse! Wish I would have found that place. When I was young, eons ago, I wanted to be a lighthouse keeper. (I’m the oldest in a large family and the privacy sounded like heaven). And I followed my dream career and became a librarian….now the 2000 year-old librarian.
Thanks, Doris Ann. Sometimes being alone in a lighthouse does have appeal, doesn’t it.
I love your series. This would be a great book to add to my cozy challenge list. Thanks for a chance to win a copy.
