Lye in Wait by Cricket McRae is the first book in the “Home Crafting” series. Publisher: Midnight Ink, October 2007

Cocoa butter soap, check. Lemon lip balm, check. A dead body?

Soap maker Sophie Mae Reynolds works hard, likes single-malt Scotch, and lives with her best friend Meghan, Meghan’s ten-year-old daughter, and a snarky old Corgi. When Sophie Mae finds the neighborhood handyman dead on her workroom floor, no one can stop the impulsive crafter from trying to get to the bottom of the suspicious death—not even handsome, but annoying Detective Ambrose. Sophie Mae’s big mouth and sharp nose lead her on a peppermint-scented trail of trouble.

This crafty new mystery series features real beauty product recipes that you can make at home.

This was an enjoyable read. Sophie Mae finds her handyman dead, poisoned from the lye. The cops determined it to be suicide, but Sophie Mae knows better and starts to investigate. Things becomes serious when her house is burgled and she is almost injured. I like watching Sophie Mae sniff out the clues to solve the murder. My rating: 4 stars
