Sometimes the best way to know a person is by asking questions, so let’s meet Maddie.

What is your name?
Maddie James.

How old are you?
Early 30s.

What is your profession?
Entrepreneur – I own a juice bar in San Francisco and now, a cat cafe on an island off the coast of Massachusetts!

Do you have a significant other?
No, but I’m working on it! The island dog groomer is super cute and we’ve dated a few times, but we’re a little stalled out at the moment. . .

What is his name?
Lucas.

What is his profession?
Also an entrepreneur, owns a dog grooming business.

Any children?
No.

Do you have any sibling(s)?
Yes, two sisters, both younger – Val and Samantha.

Cats, dogs or other pets?
I rescued a stray cat I found at my grandma’s grave and named him JJ. He was my inspiration for the cat cafe.

What town do you live in?
Daybreak Island.

House or building complex?
I live in my grandpa’s house-turned-cat-cafe with Grandpa and my business partner, Ethan.

Do you rent or own?
Grandpa’s house has been in our family for generations, and thanks to an anonymous benefactor, we were able to expand it into the cat cafe.

What is your favorite spot in your house?
The reading nook on the third floor with the ocean view.

Who is your best friend?
Becky Walsh.

Amateur sleuth or professional?
Amateur.

Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
Grandpa, mostly. Sometimes my ex-boyfriend Craig, who’s a cop on the island – when I can get him to tell me anything.

Favorite meal?
Pizza or fried seafood from Moe’s.

Favorite dessert?
Ice cream – strawberry cheesecake flavored.

Favorite hobby?
Reading.

Favorite vacation spot?
Anywhere with a beach.

Favorite color?
Green.

Favorite author?
JD Salinger.

Favorite sports team?
I don’t do sports – but I’m a New England girl so I always root for the Boston teams 🙂

Movies or Broadway?
Movies.

Are you a morning or a night person?
Night owl.

In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
Since I moved back to Daybreak, there are no typical days! I’m up early cleaning up after the cats, in preparation for all their visitors during cafe hours. I usually grab a cup of coffee and sample whatever my business partner, Ethan, is making for a pastry special for the day. Then I’m there for cafe open hours, helping people with the cats, taking adoption applications, and tending to the business. At night I have dinner with Grandpa. And in between, especially these days, there’s usually a murder to solve. . .

Second in the pawsitively charming new feline mystery series set off the New England coast, where curiosity leads to some killer small-town secrets. . .

It’s the grand opening of Daybreak Island’s cat café, where customers can get cozy with an assortment of friendly felines―and maybe even take one or a few home. Co-owner Maddie James is purring with excitement over her new warm-and-fuzzy venture. . .until she becomes entangled in a petty drama between one of her volunteers, an ardent animal-rights activist, and a wealthy woman who insists on adopting a calico kitty―right this instant. The catfight that ensues is bad enough for business. But when the snubbed socialite is found dead with a tell-tale catnip toy on the scene, suspicion lands squarely on Maddie’s staffer. Now, with her reputation and her career prospects on the line (to say nothing of her budding romance with a handsome pet groomer) Maddie must do whatever it takes to solve the crime―before her nine lives are up.
