What is your full name?
Maureen Eugenia Gould. I was named after my grandfather, Eugene Gould, who was a respected justice on the California Supreme Court.

How old are you?
When I tried the Josephine Navarre case described in Implied Consent, I was 36 years old.

What is your profession?
Trial lawyer.

Do you have a significant other?
Indeed.

What is their name and profession?
Jake Kuhn, the tall, dark, handsome, Assistant District Attorney for the State of California in white collar division and a former police officer.

Do you have any children?
One daughter, Quinn Brennan. She’s twenty-two years old. I had her when I was fourteen and she was adopted out. After our recent reunion, she moved in with Jake and me.

Do you have any siblings?
No.

Are your parents nearby?
At the beginning of Implied Consent, my parents were living in the O’Shaughnessy mansion my mother had inherited. He was a business law attorney. She was a socialite heiress.

Who is your best friend?
Mickey Wong, a journalist.

Do you have cats, dogs, or other pets?
Well, there is a cat. When we first married, Jake gave me a Siamese kitten which I named Germaine Greer. But to tell you the truth, she loves Jake and barely tolerates my existence.

What town do you live in?
San Francisco.

What type of dwelling do you own or rent?
I own an urban-chic condominium in a converted warehouse in the neighborhood known as “South of Market Street.”

What is your favorite spot in your home?
The couch in front of the TV.

What is your favorite meal and dessert?
My favorite meal is Jake’s Italian Sunday Gravy. My favorite dessert is anything chocolate.

Do you have any hobbies?
No time for hobbies. I bought running shoes once. That’s as far as it got.

What music do you listen to?
Fifties rock and roll.

What is your favorite color?
Black.

What is your favorite vacation spot?
Hawaii.

Are you a morning or night person?
Mornings.

What is your idea of a really fun time?
Sleeping in.

If you were to write a memoir, what would you call it?
Chrysalis

Amateur or professional sleuth and whom do you work with?
Professional sleuth. I’m a sole practitioner. In Implied Consent, I have a paralegal, Yolanda Martinez, and an investigator, Eli Conroy.

What is a typical day in your life like?
I wake up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee made by my irrepressibly cheerful husband. I slug that down with a bagel if I can find it. I drive my yellow BMW M-5 (named “Sunny”) to the office, and I might pick up something baked and gooey with a mocha along the way if the home cupboard was bare. My office is in a Jackson Square historic brick building.

On quiet days, we plow through paperwork, phone calls, and client meetings. In the evening, I return to my condo where Jake and I take turns cooking dinner. Then we canoodle in front of the TV before going to bed. But that all goes to hell when I’m on a case.
