God’s Teeth, no one knows better than I the misery of a chinchilla living in a supernatural waystation. All the comings and goings, the strangers with strange powers, all traipsing about and making noise. We recently had a salamander staying with us – this man who could set things ablaze with his hands. Coincidentally, or so he would have us think, Enumclaw starts having arsons and kidnappings as he arrives. Can you imagine living with drama? No sooner does he arrive, than another elemental – this time an undine, a water creature, comes to call. What with those two visitors, the ravings of our rude next door neighbor, and the tensions rising in town, it is enough to turn my gray hair stark white.
If I were a younger chinchilla, I might consider moving to another residence, but I am set in my ways. Besides, only Hedy knows how I take my tea, my favorite cookies, my preference for firm pillows and wool wraps. Despite the fact that the odious cat, Zelda, also shares this Victorian house, it definitely is an improvement over my last abode. I don’t like to think about my days riding the rails with a mediocre Necromancer, looking for part time spell work.
The Gingerbread Hag is a boutique bakery in a little town called Enumclaw, Washington. It caters to those with a more sinister and strange palate. Hedy does fairly well juggling the needs of her supernatural waystation guests as she bakes up Krampus cookies and fox tail donuts. I would prefer, as I have told her many times, that she abandon the waystation life and stick to baking, but it means the world to her. Humans can be so sentimental.
Enough about me – I am due to resume reading my Proust by the fire. If you want to know more about the waystation and our menagerie of residents, you can read it for yourself in Book One of The Gingerbread Hag Mystery Series – Burned to a Crisp.
You can read more about Maurice and Hedy in Burned to a Crisp, the first book in the NEW “Gingerbread Hag” paranormal mystery series, released March 31, 2019.
Nestled deep in the sleepy heart of Enumclaw – a little town in Washington state – Hedy Leckermaul owns a bakery renowned for its strange, sugary confections. Unbeknownst to the town, she also hosts mysterious visitors. Hedy, Adelaide the ghost, and Hedy’s menagerie of animals, offer a place of safety to Enumclaw’s supernatural travelers. Life in the little town in the shadow of Mount Rainier may appear picturesque, but things are often not as they seem.
Peace and tranquility rarely last, and it isn’t long before arson and abduction rock the friendly town, turning the bakery’s world upside down. Hedy must think fast when one of her own is now in danger. She has to solve the mystery before it is too late – seconds count before you are Burned to a Crisp.
If you like mysteries with talking animals, paranormal cozy stories, fairy tales, mythology and a hefty dose of cookies, you’ll love Burned to a Crisp.
