Hi, I’m Mia Reid, also known as Professor Reid or Dr. Reid. I don’t care for titles and my students who join me on digs call me Mia.
It’s Monday evening and I’m on a flight out of Toronto Pearson Airport heading for Scotland. I’m meeting my good friend and colleague, Dr. Ethan Carter, on the Isle of Skye. One of my students, Diana Scott, is accompanying me.
We’ll be working on a dig at a broch just outside a village on the island.
What’s a broch? Well, it’s a circular stone structure that’s only found in Scotland. They date back to the Iron Age. It served as a residence or as a fort to defend the locals from attacking enemies.
Anyway, back to Ethan… I received an email from him this morning and he and his team have uncovered some interesting artifacts. The normal cooking utensils, pots, and some weapons too. But today, they found a ring and a dagger dotted with gemstones. Ethan believes a person of wealth may have left behind them.
Now, before you get all excited, that’s not what we normally find on digs. Most of the time, we find detritus from everyday life that helps us learn more about the people who inhabited the area. You know things like pots, utensils, maybe weapons, and clothing. That sort of thing.
There’s been talk at the village pub that Bonnie Prince Charlie may have spent some time at the broch and the locals would be ecstatic if we found proof of that.
Ethan mentioned he thought he was being followed and that he’d be going back to the dig after dinner to check on things. I’m concerned about that. We’ve had to deal with looters or pot hunters in the past. I was hoping we’d avoid that in Scotland. He hasn’t responded to my email yet, but I’m going to think positive and hope for the best.
It promises to be a fun summer. In Scotland, working with my good friend, and exploring the Isle of Skye. What could go wrong?
