The Fog Ladies by Susan McCormick is the first book in the NEW “San Francisco Cozy Murder” mystery series. Publisher: The Wild Rose Press, coming October 9, 2019.
Young, overworked medical intern Sarah James has no time for sleuthing. Her elderly neighbors, the spunky Fog Ladies, have nothing but time. When, one by one, old ladies die in their elegant apartment building in San Francisco, Sarah assumes the deaths are the natural consequence of growing old. The Fog Ladies assume murder.
Mrs. Bridge falls off a stool cleaning bugs out of her kitchen light. Mrs. Talwin slips on bubbles in the bath and drowns. Suddenly, the Pacific Heights building is turning over tenants faster than the fog rolls in on a cool San Francisco evening.
Sarah resists the Fog Ladies’ perseverations. But when one of them falls down the stairs and tells Sarah she was pushed, even Sarah believes evil lurks in their building. Can they find the killer before they fall victim themselves?
The drama unfolds with the accidental deaths of two residents of a building complex in San Francisco. Or were they accidents? That is what the “Fog Ladies” hope to uncover in this engaging light tale with a comfortable tone and a steady pace that is felt throughout until the climactic moment when the killer’s identity is revealed.
The author did a great job in staging this drama that kept me immersed in all that was happening. The mystery was nicely executed keeping me glued to the pages as I had to know who was doing what to whom or was it just their imagination. The suspect pool was small, but the author did a good job in distracting me with clues, here and there, and when I thought I had it figured out, the author changed direction, all to the betterment of the story being told.
As the narrative moved forward, we continue to learn more about the occupants and visitors and the play-by-play action reaches a frenetic pacing lending itself to a race against time to stop a killer before another accident occurs. Life goes on in the building complex and I look forward to their next foray in this pleasant appealing series.
