One Small Sacrifice by Hilary Davidson is the first book in the NEW “Shadows of New York” domestic thriller series. Publisher: Thomas & Mercer, coming June 1, 2019.
An apparent suicide. A mysterious disappearance. Did one man get away with murder—twice?
NYPD detective Sheryn Sterling has had her eye on Alex Traynor ever since his friend Cori fell to her death under suspicious circumstances a year ago. Cori’s death was ruled a suicide, but Sheryn thinks Alex—a wartime photojournalist suffering from PTSD—got away with murder.
When Alex’s fiancée, Emily, a talented and beloved local doctor, suddenly goes missing, Sheryn suspects that Alex is again at the center of a sticky case. Sheryn dislikes loose ends, and Cori’s death had way too many of them.
But as Sheryn starts pulling at the threads in this web, her whole theory unravels. Everyone involved remembers the night Cori died differently—and the truth about her death could be the key to solving Emily’s disappearance.
Sometimes a book is just a book and sometimes a book takes you on an exhilarating journey that has you twisted this way and that and when all is said and done, you sit back and relish what you just read.
From the onset, we are led to believe that Alex is somehow involved in two incidents, a murder and a disappearance. It’s what the author does with the narrative that had me enthralled in what the main protagonists had to say, illustrated by the chapters focused on their verbiage. The more I read, the more the author delivered a compelling drama of intrigue, suspense and down-right anxiety because all the pieces, separately do not completely tell the tale – a complex tale of deceit.
The author does a great job in telling this story that kept me guessing and every time I thought I knew what was going on or who was responsible. . . the author twisted the corkscrew in this gem with another facet left to consider, advanced the storytelling – only to let me be consumed by what the author was dictating, until it all came to fruition by all that transpired, including the aftermath. From Alex to Sheryn to Emily to Cori to Kevin to CJ to Rafael to Will – the consequences of their action propelled this tightly woven drama to a thrilling finish. Good job by the author. Well done.
