Jordan McAllister’s brother, Danny, is in deep trouble and has been jailed in Amarillo. After a night on the town at the local cowboy bar, Danny had awakened in a seedy motel room next to a naked woman with a steak knife protruding from her chest. Since Danny’s fingerprints are all over the knife, and his DNA is under her nails, he’s charged with the murder of Carlita Fontaine, a dancer at a local strip club. Now Jordan, along with her quirky friends and new fiancé, Dallas FBI agent Alex Moreland, race to Amarillo to try to find a way to help her brother out of his dire situation. Meanwhile, Alex, on leave after a near-death experience in the jungles of Mexico, is asked to assist the local FBI in locating the origins of a more dangerous version of fentanyl. A version that’s being laced with an animal tranquilizer and responsible for a large number of drug-related deaths.
Dru’s Short Musing:
I love this series. When her brother is arrested for a crime, he did not commit, Jordan and her friends head to her hometown to look for answers.
This was a fast-paced and well-designed drama that I could not put down because I had to know who was doing what to whom. The author did a great job in staging this whodunit with an intriguing case that had everyone playing a pivotal role in this mystery. With a small pool of suspect, the author kept me busy checking the clues and when I thought I had an inkling on the person responsible, the author changed directions all to enhance my reading pleasure. There were a few strategically placed twists that kept me in the game. But the best part of the book is the camaraderie between Jordan, Victor, Rosie, Lola, Ray, Michael, and Alex who will do anything for each other, that made this book delightfully engaging. Boasting a great cast of characters, witty dialogue, and a small-town atmosphere, this was one of the best in this endearing series and I can’t wait for the next one, which I hope is a wedding book.
