Middle child Aaron Gimmelman watches as his family goes from a mild-mannered reform Jewish clan to having over a million dollars of stolen money stuffed in their RV’s cabinets while being pursued by the FBI and loan sharks. But it wasn’t always like that. His father Barry made a killing as a stockbroker, his mother Judith loved her collection of expensive hats, his older sister Steph was obsessed with pop stars, and little sister Jenny loved her stuffed possum, Seymour.
Dru’s Short Musing:
A dysfunctional family with dysfunctional tendencies runs amok when trying to escape the foibles of the head patriarch that takes us on an emotional rollercoaster of a ride.
The author did a great job in presenting this fast-paced and well-written tome that quickly became a page turner as I had to know what was going on and how it was going to end, especially with Aaron telling the story. I liked that the writing was crisp with a comfortable tone making it easy to follow along with what the author intended. The main cast of characters were amusing and eclectic in their own way, adding to the antics employed by them all to survive in the situation they were living in. There were some laugh-out-loud moments and some sad ones, which makes for an intriguing and suspenseful read. As the story moved forward, what the Gimmelmans seek is right there for them to discover within themselves. The fun part of the book was the references to the 80s which I fondly remember. Overall, this is a terrific read and I look forward to reading more stories from Lee Matthew Goldberg.
