A vacation in the Hamptons goes terribly wrong for three friends with a complicated history. It was meant to be a harmless prank. Growing up, May Hanover was a good girl, always. Well-behaved, top of her class, a compulsive rule-follower. Raised by a first-generation Chinese single mother with high expectations, May didn’t have room to slip up, let alone fail. Her friends didn’t call her the Little Sheriff for nothing. When she finds herself at the center of an urgent police investigation, May begins to wonder whether Lauren and Kelsey are keeping secrets from her, testing the limits of her loyalty to lifelong friends.

Dru’s Short Musing:
In this unputdownable drama, Alafair Burke gets top billing in delivering a dynamic tale that held my attention from beginning to its conclusion, quickly becoming a page-turner.

Friends, a dysfunction on its own and when a secret bares its wrath, the tension escalates in this story that had me completely immersed in all aspects. May, Lauren and Kelsey hold the key and Alafair keeps the reader intrigue and in suspense as she breaks down the action-packed tome with visually descriptive narrative that kept me engaged with the powerfulness of the wickedly solid plotline being presented. The mystery was expertly executed with the right amount of tension, apprehension, and revelation. The verbiage, the dialogue, the setting, the pacing, and the characters all had pivotal roles in the technique used to stage this complex tale of deceit where a prank goes wrong. Overall, this was an terrific read and it was great to get behind another Alafair Burke novel.
