The Wrong Boy by Cathy Ace is the thirteenth novel by a prolific and award-winning author. Publisher: Four Tails Publishing Ltd, coming January 9, 2019.
Perched on a Welsh clifftop, the ancient, picturesque hamlet of Rhosddraig has its peaceful façade ripped apart when human remains are discovered under a pile of stones. The village pub, The Dragon’s Head, run by three generations of women, becomes the focal point for those interested in the grisly find, and it’s where layers of deceit are peeled away to expose old secrets, and deep wounds. The police need to establish who died, how, and why, but DI Evan Glover knows he can’t be involved in the investigation, because he’s just two days away from retirement. However, as the case develops in unexpected ways, it becomes irrevocably woven into his life, and the lives of local families, leading to disturbing revelations – and deadly consequences . . .
This complex tale of three generations of women sets the stage for this haunting tale where secrets has a stronghold on their lives precipitating their actions and reactions. Like a slow pot that boils, the author builds up each scene until an explosion of words bring it all falling down and there is nothing left but to savor the story contained within the pages. A smorgasbord of characters left to their own devices keep the story percolating as I watched the drama simmer giving me the pretense that all will be calm but then boom. . . the author pulled out all the stops and have me tingling with excitement as I wonder how this will all play out. With the stroke of a pen, the author’s brilliance shines when a strategically place plot twist came to light and the tables are turned at the surprised and chaotic turn of events. This tightly-woven and intriguing mystery was grippingly riveting as the story came to a dramatic climax.
