Come Homicide or High Water by Denise Swanson is the third book in the “Welcome Back to Scumble River” cozy mystery series. Publisher: Sourcebooks, December 31, 2019.

There’s something fishy just below the surface of Scumble River. . .

School psychologist Skye Denison-Boyd is getting ready to return to work from her maternity leave and hoping for a peaceful year in her job as a school psychologist. But when an elderly woman disappears on her first day back and a disgruntled parent threatens to sue the school, Skye realizes that her return will be anything but quiet.

When the parent suing Skye’s school is found dead and with the missing woman’s case is still unsolved, Skye suspects the crimes are somehow linked. With her chief of police husband, Wally, at her side, Skye dives into the investigations. But as tensions rise and Skye and Wally’s suspect list lengthens, they start to wonder whether a member of their own tight-knit community could be behind it all. . .

This is another fine example of how great the author is in telling a story that had me completely immersed in all aspects, quickly become a page-turner as I could not put this book down. From the exceptional writing style to the visually descriptive narrative to the engaging dialogue, I was consumed by the double mystery which kept me on my toes.

The author did a great job in keeping me intrigued and when I thought I had a handle on the elements of the crime, the author changed the direction with a few red herrings that I did not see coming, that enhanced my reading pleasure. It was good to see how Skye handled working and taking care of the twins with help from Wally. As always it was good to see the secondary characters playing their part and of course, words can’t describe how I feel about the eccentrically quirky clan that are the Dooziers – just love them.

This is one of the best book in this delightfully endearing series and I can’t wait for the next chapter in the lives of the residents of Scumble River.
