Nichelle Clarke first appeared in Front Page Fatality and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Nichelle.
What is your name?
Nichelle Clarke.
How old are you?
29
What is your profession?
Crime beat reporter.
Do you have a significant other?
Yes.
What is his name and profession?
Joey. He’s in transportation, and maybe a few other things I don’t ask too many questions about.
Any children?
No. No, no.
Do you have any sibling(s)?
No. Just me and my mom. She’s my hero.
Do your parents live near you?
I wish! I moved to Virginia to follow my dream, and she’s back home in Dallas. I miss her every day.
Who is your best friend?
Jenna—she’s supermom, she runs an amazing bookshop, and she’s a fabulously talented artist.
Cats, dogs or other pets?
One very spoiled bitsy Pomeranian.
What town do you live in?
Richmond, VA.
House or building complex? Own or Rent?
I rent a super charming 1920s craftsman in the Fan. Someday, I’d love to buy this place, if I end up staying in town.
What is your favorite spot in your house?
The front porch. I have a big swing with fantastically fluffy pillows, and it’s just the best place to read, think, or catch up with a friend.
Favorite meal? Favorite dessert?
Fajitas and margaritas. Almost anything with white chocolate.
Favorite hobby?
Puzzles! I almost always have one out on my coffee table, the harder the better.
Favorite author?
I don’t get much reading time these days, but there’s an investigative reporter up in Boston who writes these great mysteries—Hank Phillipi Ryan. She works in TV, but I don’t hold it against her.
Favorite vacation spot?
The beach. I have a fabulous collection of glass I’ve collected walking shorelines since I was a little girl.
Favorite sports team?
The Dallas Cowboys. I grew up watching my mom cheer for Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith like they could hear her through the TV, and even here in Redskins country, I’m still a blue-and-silver diehard.
Movies or Broadway?
I adore Broadway but can’t often afford it. Movies are more in my price range.
Are you a morning or a night person?
Night. I do a lot of my best thinking staring at my ceiling fan after midnight.
Amateur sleuth or professional?
Hmmm. I’m not a police officer, but I do get paid to get the truth first, and I’m getting pretty good at it if I do say so myself. So, I’m kind of straddling the line.
Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
I’ve worked hard to be fair and earn the trust of a whole truckload of police officers, attorneys, and federal agents. And those connections I don’t like to ask my boyfriend about come in handy sometimes, too.
In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
There’s no such thing, really—one of my favorite things about the news business is that I never know what a given day will bring. A quiet Friday can turn into a hectic race for a headline with a scanner report or a hurried text from a cop. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
