….Missing cops, a wayward casket, and a dash of sexy mobster
“The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”
I read that somewhere when I was in college, but I don’t remember in which book, or even which class. I’ve thought about the phrase a lot this summer, though. I’m up to my body-combat-toned rear end in dead guys and missing people, and I’m trying my best to figure out what happened to my favorite cops while not ticking off whoever’s responsible for this mess. But my inner Lois Lane tells me I’m getting myself into more trouble with every Google search and interview.
I actually used to think my life—outside of work, anyway—was fairly dull. I’m a reporter, currently covering cops and courts for the Richmond Telegraph. Between the criminal-du-jour and trying to stay ahead of my TV rival, my days can be long and gruesome, but are generally pretty interesting.
The nights are a whole ‘nother story, though. One that usually involves my spoiled toy Pomeranian, a jigsaw puzzle, a bottle of wine, and scouring eBay for used Louboutins that are in my Nine West price range.
But that could change, I think. I got home from work the other night to find an Armani-clad Christian Bale clone in my living room, and I haven’t felt sparks like that with a guy since I left my first love at a gate at DFW International when I headed off to Syracuse University to chase my dreams. Sexy, smart, clever—the only issue is that I’m pretty sure he’s a Mafia boss. But that’s more interesting than puzzles and eBay, right?
Plus, if he’s right about this story, I could land that byline at the Washington Post I’ve wanted since I could talk.
Beep.
Oops. Be right back. I just have to check my police scanner.
Wow. Sounds like I’m going to have to excuse myself for a bit—there’s a junkyard owner out in Amelia who found a coffin in his driveway this morning. A coffin! The dispatcher said she asked him what was in it and he started screaming at her about his tax money and coffee, so I’m betting he hasn’t opened it.
If you’ll excuse me, I have a few phone calls to make and an article to write. Whatever else is in that casket, I smell a story—and whether it turns out to be horrifying or hilarious, my day just got a lot more interesting.
LynDee is giving away one (1) copy of FRONT PAGE FATALITY. Contest open to US residents only and ends January 31. Leave a comment to be included in the giveaway. Book will be shipped directly from the author.
You can read more about Nichelle in Front Page Fatality, the first book in the new “Headlines in Heels” mystery series.
Meet the author
LynDee Walker grew up in the land of stifling heat and amazing food most people call Texas, and wanted to be Lois Lane from the time she could say the words “press conference.” An award-winning journalist, she traded cops and deadlines for burp cloths and onesies when her oldest child was born. Writing the Headlines in Heels mysteries gives her the best of both worlds. When not writing or reading, LynDee is usually wrangling children, eating barbecue or enchiladas, or trying to walk off said barbecue and enchiladas. She and her family live in Richmond, Virginia. You can reach LynDee on her website, Twitter or Facebook.
Books are available at retail and online booksellers.

This sounds like a good deal of fun. I’m looking forward to it even if I need another series to follow like I need a hole in my head. 😉
Somebody in our neighborhood actually found a beheaded deer in the driveway—that bad enough—but a coffin??? I’ve got to read this.

Thanks so much, y’all! The casket story actually comes from one I covered when I was working as a reporter, in my pre-mommy life. 🙂 It was a doozy. And fun to play with in Nichelle’s fictional world!
