Olive Belgrave first appeared in Murder at Archly Manor and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Olive.
What is your name?
Olive Belgrave.
How old are you?
Early twenties.
What is your profession?
Jobs are thin on the ground since the Great War, but I’ve discovered that I’m quite good at solving problems for the high society set.
Do you have a significant other?
There is a certain gentleman whose company I enjoy, but earning enough to pay for my boardinghouse room in London takes most of my time and attention.
What is his name and profession?
Jasper Rimington, and he’s a gentleman about town.
Any children?
Good heavens, no! I’m not a married lady.
Do you have any sibling(s)?
Sadly, no, but I do have cousins and a dear aunt and uncle.
Do your parents live near you?
My mother died when I was young, so it was always me and my father . . . until recently. I thought he was a confirmed bachelor, but I was wrong. He and his new wife—my extremely trying stepmother—live in the village where I grew up, Nether Woodsmoor, which is only a train-ride away.
Who is your best friend?
My sweet cousin Gwen has been my closest confidant since we were children.
Cats, dogs or other pets?
No—I don’t have the time or money to have a pet.
What town do you live in?
London.
House or building complex? Own or Rent?
I’m currently renting a room in a boardinghouse.
What is your favorite spot in your house?
I’m quite fond of my attic room. It’s not much, but it is my very own space.
Favorite meal? Favorite dessert?
I tend to get by on threepenny buns and tea, so any thing more substantial than that is a delight. Sometimes Jasper and I go to The Savoy, where they have delicious peach Melba, one of my favorites!
Favorite hobby?
I don’t have much time for hobbies at the moment, but Jasper has lent me some of his crime novels, and I’m finding them rather addicting.
Favorite author?
I just read The Secret Adversary by a new author, Agatha Christie, and it was a jolly good tale.
Favorite vacation spot?
I can’t afford a proper holiday, but I do enjoy a nice drive in the countryside.
Movies or Broadway?
Movies, or pictures, as we call them.
Are you a morning or a night person?
Morning. And it’s a good thing, too. A working girl can’t sleep all day like the bright young people.
Amateur sleuth or professional?
Well, I don’t have any official certification, but I have been paid for sorting out who committed a few murders and I always behave in a professional—and ladylike—way.
Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
I usually work alone, but Jasper and my cousin Gwen often help me out.
In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
It varies. If I have a commission, I focus all my attention on it, and it often involves traveling to small villages or staying in elegant London town houses so I can be around the people who are involved. However, I’m “off the clock” at the moment. I’m traveling to Parkview Hall. I’m looking forward to a few quiet days in the country . . . although, Gwen has two suitors who will be there. She says there’s tension in the air, but I’m sure it will all be fine—just fine. No one will be murdered or anything ghastly like that . . .
You can read about Olive in Murder in Black Tie, the fourth book in the “High Society Lady Detective” historical mystery series, released October 15, 2019.
Top hats and tails. Mink and murder . . .
November, 1923. An invitation to a house party at the estate of Parkview Hall is a welcome respite for Olive Belgrave, a newly minted working girl who’s become the solver of high society’s trickiest problems.
But when the sumptuous black tie event turns deadly, Olive’s cousin Peter becomes the main suspect. Olive must unmask a sophisticated killer before an innocent man takes the blame . . . because murder doesn’t RSVP.
