My name is Dr. Olivia Jones, and I’m a board-certified medical examiner. I’ve lived in New York City for the past five years, but something happens that brings up some trauma from my past. I was doing so well for so long, but this incident sets me right back to square one. So, I pack up my belongings and take a coroner job in a remote, seaside fishing village in northern Maine called Coldwater Cove.
Everyone is so nice and welcoming, and the food is fabulous. The Claw is a pub right in the marina with a nautical theme, seventies classic rock music, and plenty of locals. I’m becoming best friends with my girls: the sheriff’s wife, his deputy, the mayor, and the local realtor who’s new to town like me. That hasn’t happened in a long time for me, so I’m thinking of putting down roots in the cove for real this time.
Then the unthinkable happens.
A dead body washes up in the marina during the spring thaw. I’m the coroner, so I’m the one who determines she was murdered. It turns out she’s not local, but when a second woman winds up murdered, it hits close to home. This is the last thing Coldwater Cove needs after the winter blizzard destroyed a lot of the harbor. The spring festivals are a necessity in raising funds to get the cove back on its feet, but who wants to partake in festivities when murder is afoot?
When a third woman ends up murdered, Special Agent FBI Profiler Hank Masters is called in to help. The sheriff used to be an FBI agent, so the two men hit it off right away and work closely together. They suspect they have a serial killer on the loose. Of course, they need my help, which is understandable yet unnerving, nonetheless. Hank Masters is about the most attractive man I’ve ever seen, and if I’m not mistaken, he seems to show an unsettling amount of interest in me as well.
I came to the cove to get away from murder, yet here I am surrounded by it. No one knows my secret. I want to trust Hank, but I’m a good judge of character. He seems like a nice enough guy, but there is definitely something he’s hiding from me. Besides, he lives in Boston and is only in the cove temporarily. I’m not sure what is going to happen. All I know for certain is that this is not the fresh start I was looking for, and I’m not at all certain how much more of this I can take.
