My name is Patience O’Reilly, and I’m a white witch.

I have the gift of granting wishes. Not any and all wishes. Just the kind that really matter and you’re sure the result is perfect for life. There are no do-overs! To be clear, I don’t do lotto wins, harming others, weight loss, boob jobs etc. Nor will I make someone fall in love with you. My wishes are subtle and if I want to keep making them, I have to be careful not to undo the balance—of the world.

Yes, it’s a serious and mostly fun business. To help things run smoothly, my familiar, Lucky, keeps me on the straight and narrow as best he can. The clever black terrier can be bossy and is a sulker if not listened to. However, people adore him. Which is a handy way to break the ice.

I used to be a PI, though not qualified. I guess you could say I was a trainee and thanks to my friend, Bazil, I learned so much on the job. The trouble was, chasing down domestic infidelities just wasn’t for me and I wasn’t really using my gift appropriately, so I had to quit. Now I have my own clients who I choose to work with and things are going much better. Or so it seemed.

My elderly client is filthy rich and yet a real sweetie who can’t see her children’s faults. Well, she sees them, but seems incapable of doing anything about it. My job is to help bring her divided family back together. Every day my fingers tingle with the urge to make a wish or two, but first I have to decide how the main wish should play out to ensure that I don’t mess anything up.

Then there’s the issue with a cute police officer who thinks I’m weird, a dead woman who I really liked, and missing jewelry.

Lucky thinks I’m in over my head and I’m worried he may be right!

My name is Patience O’Reilly and I grant people their last wishes.

I promise it’s not as macabre as it sounds, and If asked I’ll say that I facilitate happiness.

Of course people aren’t always clear about what they want or need and it’s my job to sort through all the drama and find the thing that will make them smile.

It’s not a bad job at all. Though I am terribly nosey and a mystery can be so much fun. When you’re in the mood.

My Terrier, Lucky agrees with that, so it must be right.
