Sometimes the best way to know a person is by asking questions, where you can learn more about what makes them tick. Get to know Riley with her answers below.

What is your name?
– – Riley Elizabeth Ellison

How old are you?
– – 24 and 3/4.

What is your profession?
– – I am a reporter at the Tuttle Times.

Do you have a significant other?
– – Not unless you consider my dog significant.

What is his name?
– – I said no– don’t rub it in, okay?

What is his profession?
– – You’re not giving up, are you? Fine. If you must know, I did have a boyfriend. His name was Jay and he was a DEA agent and like Mary Poppins he was “practically perfect in every way.” But we broke up recently due to. . . well, I won’t get into it. Suffice it to say, things just didn’t work out.

Any children?
– – Thank heavens, no.

Do you have any sibling(s)?
– – Nope.

Cats, dogs or other pets?
– – My dog, Coltrane, was a former police dog who was unable to serve because he became gun shy, the poor thing. He was rescued by my friend Jordan James and I inherited him when she unexpectedly passed away.

What town do you live in?
– – Tuttle Corner, VA.

Do you rent or own?
– – I was lucky enough to be gifted my granddaddy’s house when he died.

House or building complex?
– – It’s an old craftsman style home with a cozy front porch and window boxes he made himself.

What is your favorite spot in your house?
– – Granddaddy built a wall of bookshelves in the living room that’s as big as some libraries. There’s always something on those shelves that brings me comfort.

Who is your best friend?
– – That’s a tough one. Unfortunately, I let most of my friendships go when I was wrapped up in my now-failed relationship with Ryan. But I’m working on it. Right now I’d have to say my co-worker Will Holman is probably the friend I talk to the most.

Amateur sleuth or professional?
– – That’s another tough one. I’m a reporter, so it’s my professional responsibility to go after the truth. But there are some who say I take it too far, that I cross the line from reporter to detective when I’m working on a story. I like to think that I’m just being thorough. . .

Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
– – Holman is my mentor at the Times and we work together closely, but recently he was out on assignment when a big story dropped into my lap. I ended up working it by myself with some help from acting-sheriff Carl Haight and (as much as I hate to admit it) my ex-boyfriend’s baby-mama, Ridley Nilsson, aka the Swedish Goddess .

Favorite meal?
– – Chicken Milanese with the arugula salad from James Madison’s Fish Shack.

Favorite dessert?
– – Almond croissant from Rosalee’s Tavern. (Note: this is also my favorite breakfast.)

Favorite hobby?
– – Reading. Obvs.

Favorite vacation spot?
– – Anywhere along the southeastern coast – Hilton Head, Charleston, Savannah, the outer banks of North Carolina. Basically anywhere they serve shrimp ‘n grits.

Favorite color?
– – Yellow.

Favorite author?
– – I could never pick just one! But one of my favorite books of all time is To Kill A Mockingbird.

Favorite sports team?
– – What are these “sports” you speak of? 😉

Movies or Broadway?
– – Movies I think, but to be fair I’ve actually never seen a show on Broadway. I’d love to someday.

Are you a morning or a night person?
– – Night owl.

In two to three sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
– – My day usually starts and ends with a walk for Coltrane. In between, I go into the Times office, make phone calls, conduct interviews, and spend a lot of time on my laptop writing up the stories I’ve been assigned. On Sundays, I always eat dinner at my (vegan) parents house which often includes a stop for a milkshake on the way home. Sometimes a girl just needs her dairy.

You can read about Riley in The Bad Break, the second book in the “Riley Ellison” mystery series. The first book in the series is The Good Byline.

Riley Ellison has taken a great leap of faith by giving up her comfortable job at the Tuttle Corner Library for the exciting world of print journalism. Except that so far it hasn’t been very exciting. All that changes when Riley’s former co-worker Tabitha finds her soon-to-be father-in-law dead on the floor of his office, and Riley is asked to write his obituary. And when they discover Tabitha’s fiancé’s knife sticking out of his father’s chest, Riley finds herself with a murder investigation to cover as well.

With Holman out on leave and mounting pressure from her boss, the mayor, and a bridezilla facing the possibility of a conjugal-visit honeymoon, Riley is desperate to prove she can handle the increasing demands of her new job. Despite warnings from her new boyfriend Jay, Riley blurs the line between reporter and investigator. Will Riley’s rookie mistakes lead to more than just her byline ending up on the obituary page?
