Sadie Hoffmiller first appeared in Lemon Tart and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Sadie.
What is your name?
Sarah Diane Wright Hoffmiller Cunningham, but you can call me Sadie.
How old are you?
59-ish and, yes, that’s all I’m going to say about that.
What is your profession?
Retired school teacher, semi-retired private investigator–don’t tell Pete about that last.
Do you have a significant other?
I certainly do!
What is his name and profession?
Pete Cunningham. Retired police detective, still works on a cold case task squad.
Any children?
Two of my own, Pete has three.
Do you have any sibling(s)?
My brother Jack. Our sister Wendy is deceased (see Fortune Cookie)
Do your parents live near you?
Both of my parents are deceased, but they are buried in Garrison, does that count?
Who is your best friend?
Pete 🙂
Cats, dogs or other pets?
No, but I like other people’s pets.
What town do you live in?
Fort Collins, Colorado.
House or building complex? Own or Rent?
Pete and I bought a lovely condo after we married. I worried I wouldn’t like it, but I have really grown to appreciate the compact space and perks of having an HOA. They mow the lawn, for instance, and make sure none of the other tenants do anything untoward, like fly inappropriate flags or park in undesignated areas. It’s been quite lovely, really.
What is your favorite spot in your house?
The kitchen!
Favorite meal? Favorite dessert?
Oh goodness, I couldn’t possibly choose a favorite. Food is kind of my thing. All types.
Favorite hobby?
Cooking.
Favorite color?
Blue, especially when Pete wears it.
Favorite author?
Dr. Seuss. The man was a genius, even if his personal life was rather checkered.
Favorite vacation spot?
Anywhere with sunshine and Pete.
Favorite sports team?
Gosh, I don’t know. Let me ask Pete . . . he says the Broncos and the Nuggets, an unfortunate name, that.
Movies or Broadway?
Broadway, please! Preferably in London!
Are you a morning or a night person?
Mornings once I’ve done my stretches.
Amateur sleuth or professional?
Oh, professional. But retired. Sort of.
Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
I tend to work better on my own, with calculated requests for assistance as needed.
In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
Oh goodness, the days are just packed with cooking and volunteer work and keeping up on the condo and snuggling with Pete and talking to my kids. I love to watch our grandkids when Pete’s girls need a sitter and there’s usually a friend or neighbor who I share a treat or a chat with. Honestly, I just don’t know where the time goes most days.
You can read about Sadie in The Candy Cane Caper, the 13th book in the “Culinary” cozy mystery series, released October 1, 2019.
The theft of a friend’s priceless, family-legacy Christmas ornaments brings amateur detective and culinary expert, Sadie Hoffmiller, back on the case in a new standalone cozy mystery.
In the latest chapter to the Culinary Mystery series, amateur detective Sadie Hoffmiller continues combining her sleuthing with her cooking and baking to connect with people and gain information she might otherwise not have access to. Moreover, now that Sadie is married to Detective Pete Cunningham, she has a street-savvy husband to test out her crime-solving theories.
With Christmas approaching, Sadie is preparing for a large blended-family gathering—including many new grandchildren—in their home in Fort Collins, Colorado. Even with the festive chaos, Sadie drops everything when word gets out that her friend, Mary, is the victim of a holiday robbery.
At ninety-four years old, and nearly blind, Mary knows this is may be her last Christmas and the last year to enjoy her family heirloom Christmas tree ornaments. She wants just one more holiday to display her ornaments and following Christmas Eve Mass, she’ll pass them on to her great-granddaughter, Joy. Though priceless to the family, the collection has been valued at $40,000, and the Christmas tree in the care facility has never looked so good. But before the ornaments can be retrieved by Mary, eleven of the most expensive ornaments are stolen.
A holiday Christmas caper might be new to Sadie, but she’s ready to mix in her seasoned crime-solving skills with a pinch of new holiday recipes.
