Sally Castle is a sleuth in the “Laurel Highlands” mysteries. One of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions. So, let’s get to know Sally.
What is your full name?
Sarah Marie Castle. But please, if you really like me, just call me Sally.
How old are you?
I’m 34.
What is your profession?
I’m an assistant public defender for Fayette County.
Do you have a significant other?
Well, not yet, but I’d sure like one. Hint, hint, Jim.
What is their name and profession?
Jim Duncan, he’s a trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police. I know, I know – defense attorney and a cop. It works.
Do you have any children?
No, as my mother is constantly reminding me.
Do you have any siblings?
Yes, both older. My sister, Noreen, and my brother, Jonathan.
Are your parents nearby?
Yes, which I find both happy and annoying (especially when my mother reminds me I’ll be 35 soon and am still not married with kids).
Who is your best friend?
Outside work, probably Nan. But I’m getting to be good friends with the new attorney we hired, Tanelsa Parson. She’s a riot.
Do you have any pets?
Unfortunately, no. I live in a pet-free apartment. But I adore Jim’s golden retriever, Rizzo.
What town do you live in?
I live in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in Fayette County.
Would you say you live in a small town or a big city?
Neither? Sorry. Uniontown is technically a “city,” but it’s not very big, not even as big as Pittsburgh. But it’s no small town, either.
Type of dwelling and do you own or rent?
I rent an apartment.
What is your favorite spot in your home?
Hmm. My apartment isn’t very big, but I’m most comfortable curled up on my couch in the living room, usually with my favorite quilt piled around me.
Favorite meal and dessert?
Oh gosh. This is where I’m supposed to be all sophisticated, isn’t it? But really, I love a good bacon cheeseburger. Follow it up with a hot fudge sundae and I’m a happy girl.
Do you have any hobbies?
Not really. I’m usually too busy with work.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
I like it right here in the Laurel Highlands, but if you said, “Here are two plane tickets to anywhere,” I’d probably go to New Orleans.
What music do you listen to?
It really depends on my mood. To just relax, I like light jazz, but if I want to keep my energy up I’ll listen to classic rock.
Do you have a favorite book?
Don’t tell anyone, okay? I love romances. I don’t have a favorite title, but the genre is my guilty secret.
What is your idea of a really fun time?
Spend the day in Pittsburgh at one of the museums, then get dinner at a really nice restaurant. Then see a show in the Cultural District. Follow that up with a nightcap. All with the right person, of course. Hint, hint Jim.
If you were to write a memoir, what would you call it?
** I Don’t Look for Trouble, Honest **
Amateur or professional sleuth and whom do you work with?
Interesting question. Both? I mean, I’m not a professional investigator, but I am a criminal defense lawyer, which means I have to ask questions to provide my client with the best defense. Lately I’ve been working a lot with Tanelsa, but I have been known to partner up with Jim from time to time.
In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
Thanks to shows like Law & Order, people think criminal law is very glamorous. It’s not. I get to work early and get a cup of coffee. I review my current case load. I might meet with a prosecutor to discuss a proposed plea or sometimes I get to go to court. If Bryan, that’s my boss, gives me a new case, I will meet with a client. I wish I could tell you I spend my days presenting passionate defenses in court, but. . .
Broken Trust is the third book in the “Laurel Highlands” traditional mystery series, released August 11, 2020.
When Pennsylvania State Trooper Jim Duncan responds to a murder scene at a local mining company, the call hits close to home. The victim, Lonnie Butler, is a friend and neighbor who was just beginning to get back on his feet after a year of financial difficulties. Despite entertaining out-of-town family, Jim vows to stay involved in the case.
Meanwhile, Fayette County assistant public defender Sally Castle faces an ethical dilemma. Her newest client, Ethan Haverton, may be deeply involved in Lonnie’s homicide. Technically, Sally could break privilege, but she chooses not to, a decision that put her at odds with Jim.
As the investigation continues, the rift in Jim and Sally’s friendship deepens. Can the battling couple patch the break and bring the killer to justice – or will their discord allow a friend’s killer to go free?
