Sophie Kimball first appeared in Booked 4 Murder and one of the best ways to learn about a person is by asking questions, so let’s get to know Phee.

What is your name?
Sophie Vera Kimball, but everyone calls me Phee.

How old are you?
Mid-forties.

What is your profession?
Bookkeeper and certified accountant ( I love working with numbers). I work for Nate Williams, the owner of Williams Investigations in Glendale, Arizona, having moved here a few years ago from Mankato, Minnesota. I handled all of the accounts receivable for the Mankato Police Department. (Civil Service)

Do you have a significant other?
Yes, Marshall Gregory.

What is his/her name and profession?
Marshall Gregory is a retired police detective from Mankato, Minnesota who is now a private investigator for Williams Investigations in Glendale, Arizona. I had the wildest crush on him for years, never knowing he felt the same way.

Any children?
Yes, a daughter. Kalese Kimball from a former marriage. She’s in her twenties and is a teacher in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Do you have any sibling(s)?
No, but I have a cousin Kirk who grew up near me. His mother, my aunt Ina (my mother’s sister) lives here in Arizona, too.

Do your parents live near you?
Ugh. Yes. My mother – Harriet Plunkett. She’s the reason I wound up in Arizona to begin with. She lives in a senior community not far from where I live in a multi-generational community.

Who is your best friend?
Lyndy Ellsworth. She’s single, my age, and works for a medical insurance company.

Cats, dogs or other pets?
No, but I wind up taking care of my mother’s neurotic Chiweenie, Streetman, all the time.

What town do you live in?
Peoria, AZ.

House or building complex? Own or Rent?
Renting a house.

What is your favorite spot in your house?
The kitchen.

Favorite meal? Favorite dessert?
Pizza. Anything chocolate.

Favorite hobby?
Swimming and hiking.

Favorite color?
I don’t have a favorite color but I like to dress in blues and teals.

Favorite author?
Impossible to pick just one. I read all sorts of genres from mysteries to historical fiction.

Favorite vacation spot?
Any place with a beach, although it’s been a while.

Favorite sports team?
The Minnesota Vikings, although now that I’m living in Arizona, I’ve added the Arizona Cardinals as well. Would love to see either of them in the Super Bowl.

Movies or Broadway?
Love them both. Favorite musical – Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. (Don’t tell my mother or she’ll want Marshall to make it eight!)

Are you a morning or a night person?
Definitely a morning person once I’ve had my first cup of coffee.

Amateur sleuth or professional?
Amateur sleuth.

Whom do you work with when sleuthing?
My mother and her quirky book club friends, although I sometimes drag Lyndy into it as well.

In a few sentences, what is a typical day in your life like?
Get up early. Swim if possible. Drink coffee and get to the office. Handle bills, invoices, etc. Usually grab lunch with Augusta, the office secretary. We’ve got the local deliveries on speed dial. Pray my mother doesn’t call with some sort of emergency, or worse yet, news of a murder somewhere in her community.

Weekends hiking, swimming, dining with Marshall or, in some cases, Lyndy. Worst case scenario – babysitting my mother’s dog.

You can read about Sophie in Molded 4 Murder, the fifth book in the “Sophie Kimball” cozy mystery series, released August 27, 2019.

A view to a kiln . . .

Sophie “Phee” Kimball enjoys working as a bookkeeper for a private investigator. If only her mother Harriet could enjoy her retirement at Sun City West in Arizona—instead of constantly getting involved with retirees being prematurely put out to pasture. This time Quentin Dussler, a prominent member of the clay sculpting club, was found dead, clutching a piece of paper scrawled with Phee’s mother’s name.

Terrified she’s been targeted by assassins, Harriet begs Phee to investigate. What Phee uncovers is a complicated scheme that only the most diabolical of murderers would ever devise. And as she chisels away at confusing clues and potential suspects, Phee unearths something far more precious and valuable than she could imagine. Eager for answers, she takes a bold step—placing herself in the crosshairs of a stonefaced killer . . .
