The day started out wrong. We didn’t go for our usual walk. Nothing good can ever come of that. I should have turned around three times and curled up back in my bed in the corner the second I realized we were getting in the car to drive some place instead of walking out to the lighthouse on the edge of Lake Erie.
A lot of people thought I wouldn’t want to go that lighthouse anymore, not with what happened at it a few months ago. I understand why they think that and I’ll admit I have some trepidation about that spot. I also understand, however, that there is no place in Grand Lake that smells more interesting than that lake. It has everything. Water. Sky. Fish. People. Squirrels. It’s like a nasal cornucopia every day.
Except today. When we didn’t go to the lake. When we got in the car and drove to the hotel instead. When we found what we found in that hotel room instead.
I’m glad I was there. Rebecca needed me. Afterwards, we sat in the hallway and she hid her face in my fur and leaned against me. Who would she have leaned against if I hadn’t been there? That ex-husband of hers? Just thinking about his scent makes me growl. Nothing good happens when he’s around. Nothing.
This time is definitely no exception. No matter what does happen, though, I’ll be here beside Rebecca.

Now the police want Antoine to come clean. Her ex may be a pain, but he’s no killer. So Rebecca decides to bag the real culprit. If she isn’t careful, however, she may be the next one getting burned.
