Occupation: Gourmet Pet Food Chef
Just when I was thinking things had settled down some in Frog Ledge, Groundhog Day came along and brought more than a shadow.
I’m Stan Connor, and I bake pet treats for a living. I’m fairly new at this gig—I’ve only been doing this since I moved to Frog Ledge about eight months ago—but I love it and I’m having a lot of fun. And success, which is so surprising to me. I mean, I know cats and pups love my food, but I never expected it to catch on like this. It used to be just me and Nutty, my Maine coon, and I made his food because he had tummy problems. I never figured I could turn it into a real business. But I did. It’s called Pawsitively Organic, because I use all organic and as many local ingredients as I can find. I even have an assistant now. And most exciting of all, Pawsitively Organic got picked to give the gift to the visiting groundhog at our town celebration this year—which is apparently quite an honor.
Yes, I live in a quirky town. I think it’s fabulous.
Anyway, I researched and tested and finally came up with a custom treat for Lilypad the Groundhog. It was supposed to be a big secret until the unveiling. Which we never got to, because Helga Oliver, our town historian, never showed up for the event. And when we went looking for her, she was, unfortunately, dead.
It seemed like a tragic accident. But as we all know, things are hardly ever what they seem, even in this idyllic, small Connecticut town.
Jake McGee, my sexy pub owner boyfriend, is taking Helga’s death especially hard. (I still can’t believe I can call him my boyfriend. Definitely getting used to that.) Helga was basically a grandmother to him, and he and his sisters are so sad. So can you blame me for not wanting to tell him about Betty Meany’s crazy talk that someone killed Helga? I mean, who kills an 87-year-old lady, for goodness sake? Helga fell down the stairs, plain and simple. Betty’s our librarian and sometimes I think she reads a little too much fiction. Especially in this case, because it makes no sense and she won’t talk about it with the police. Or anyone but me, for that matter.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. A visitor has come to town, and he’s causing a lot of ruckus. Adrian Fox, ghost hunter extraordinaire and major hottie, has brought a stellar crew to town and honed in on the building Jake and my good friend Izzy, owner of Izzy Sweet’s Sweets, are fixing up. He’s looking for something. And I think a lot of people are afraid he’s going to find it. . .
