Why do you write the genre that you write?
I’ve been lucky to be able to write in multiple genres – and mediums – in my career, but I always come back to crime. Even when I’m working in comics or other genres, like sci-fi, there’s always a criminal/noir element. I find that crime fiction sheds the brightest light on the world we live in, and I think that’s really important, always. It’s a way to tell compelling stories that also reflect what’s around us, whether we know it or not.

What’s the quirkiest quirk one of your characters has?
I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this in a book, but Pete Fernandez doesn’t mix his food – he eats in order. Like, salad, rice, protein, etc.

Tell us how you got into writing?
I’ve always imagined stories – ever since I was a kid. Whether it was adventures involving characters I knew from reading or my own creations. But it wasn’t until I got older that I realized you could make a career out of it. But for me it always started with reading. It opened the doors to everything else.

What jobs have you held before, during and/or after you became a writer?
Mostly work in marketing – comic book publicity, sales, marketing, business development, editor. So, I’m grateful that most of my career has been in a creative space.

Where do you write?
Wherever I can open my laptop!

What is your favorite deadline snack?
Chocolate is my weakness.

What are you reading now?
Maggie Haberman’s book on Trump, Confidence Man. Lots of Jaime Hernandez Love And Rockets comics. I also really loved Ausma Zehanat Khan’s Blackwater Falls and E.A. Aymar’s No Home For Killers.

What is next for you?
I’m working on a sort-of sequel to Secret Identity, set in the modern day with a new protagonist.
