Why do you write the genre that you write?
I write paranormal cozies because I love ghost stories and I love classic whodunnits. Writing in this genre lets me combine the things I love.

Tell us how you got into writing?
I’ve always written fiction, from the time I was in elementary school. I didn’t consider it as anything more than a hobby until I enrolled in The Writer’s Path at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. I’d transitioned from primary care medicine, which left little time or energy to do anything other than work, to a job conducting physical exams for military applicants. With the new job, I had my evenings and weekends free, so I signed up for writing classes as a way to get back into my hobby. By the end of the program, I had a solid manuscript and that’s when I began to think of trying to get it published.

What’s next for you?
Right now, I’m back in graduate school full-time so my writing has been non-fiction and focused on research papers for class. I’ve written the equivalent of two-thirds of a novel since July. On the fiction front, I am going to have a short story published in the Bouchercon 2021 anthology, a first for me. Writing short stories requires a different skill set than writing novels so it was a challenge. I’d like to refine a couple of my research papers and try to get them published in academic journals. I’m working on one about the contributions of Black artisans and skilled craftsmen to the 18th-century economy. I’m excited about it because the people and events of the Colonial and early American eras turned out to be much more complex and intriguing than we learned about in high school.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading history books. Colonial Craftsmen and African Americans in Newport were the two most recent. The Other Black Girl is next.

And even more fun . . .

You are stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
I assume electricity and internet access are not on the list of things we’re allowed to have on the deserted island.
In that case, a pen or pencil, paper, and my cat are the three things I’d need to have.
