Now it’s time to learn more about the authors we read. . .
What drew you to the genre you write?
I’ve always love puzzles of any sort. I have dozens of puzzle-me apps on my phone, so moving into the mystery genre was inevitable.
How did you come up with your pseudonym?
When I started this journey other authors suggested using a pseudonym for privacy issues. That was pre-world wide web era, the reasoning seemed valid. Little did we know what would happen in the late nineties. Anyway, at the time I noticed people in the bookstore were inclined to go to the middle of their preferred reading section to start their browsing. So, I thought J for a last name and A for my first name to be at the beginning of the middle. Plus, both were names I planned to name my children.
Tell us how you got into writing?
I’ve written from a very early age. My first story, all hand written sold three copies. One to my third-grade teacher Mrs. David, one to my best friend (I gave her a discount), and one to my mother—for the price of not having to wash the dinner dishes for two days. Mom still remembers the story.
What jobs have you held before, during and/or after you became a writer?
I’ve worked in restaurants, fast-food restaurants as a manger and then area supervisor. With that adventure over and after having my baby girl, I became a corporate secretary for a mid-size trucking company for the next 20 years. After retiring early from there, I worked for a few years as a Pharmaceutical Tech. Writing is my passion, however and I wrote stories during all those jobs. I just wasn’t there yet.
How many books do you have published?
DESPISED BY DARKNESS, coming July 28th, is my twelve published work. I have more sitting on my laptop.
Where do you write?
Mainly in my corner office, meaning a small desk in the corner of my bedroom. I have corner window too!
What’s your favorite genre to read?
I love mysteries, but I also love historical fiction, time travel, romantic suspense and romantic comedies. Really, it’s whatever I’m in the mood for at any given time. If you follow me on Goodreads or Bookbub, you’ll see what I’m reading.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m pretty much an open book. Follow me on social media or join my newsletter and you’ll see what I mean.
Who is an author you admire?
So, so many. If I had to pick one, a current author at this moment, I’d have to say Diane Gabaldon. Her dedication to her work and her ability to world build has me in awe. Also, her Outlander series has components of all my favorite genres.
Have you any advice for aspiring or beginning writers?
Write. Study craft. Write. Network. Write. Learn all you can about the industry. And read.
What is next for you?
I’m working on a new series. Small town mysteries, with a female amateur sleuth we all see every day, but never notice.
