Why do you write the genre that you write?
I write in the suspense/mystery genre because I’ve always been fascinated by stories of ordinary people overcoming extraordinary situations, and as a writer, I like to explore what those circumstances do to those ordinary people. Some rise above them, and others fall victim to their circumstances, but as someone who is interested in human psychology, I’m always interested in finding out how my newest imaginary friends are changed by the circumstances I create for them!

Tell us how you got into writing?
I always loved storytelling growing up, and my parents were both big readers. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write a novel, but I had to build up the courage, stamina, and belief in myself to do it. And it took a while and a number of false starts before I saw any success!

Like so many mystery authors, Agatha Christie was a huge influence when I was young, and I tried to emulate her writing in my first attempts, which were stories set in manor houses where people drank tea and called each other “Darling.” I suspect some of those stories may still exist somewhere in my parents’ attic, though let’s hope they never see the light of day!

What’s next for you?
My first three books were all part of a series. Now I’m working on a stand-alone thriller about two sisters who are haunted by the events surrounding their father’s death. I was going to call it Happy Time, but that title isn’t working anymore. I may call it The Line.

What are you reading now?
I just finished reading an advance copy of a terrific new novel by Bracken MacLeod called Closing Costs. It’s about a couple with a secret who move into an isolated house in the suburbs outside of Boston. Let’s just say things don’t go as they planned.

Now to have some fun . . .

Vanilla or chocolate
My favorite ice cream flavor is fudge swirl, but if that’s too much of a copout, I’ll go with vanilla! I love the delicate flavor and how it enhances anything it accompanies. But I won’t say no to chocolate, either!

Pizza or burgers
Even the worst pizza is better than most foods!

Broccoli or squash
I’ll fall on the broccoli side here. I especially like it when it’s been roasted in the oven and doused with olive oil and salt.

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner
I love big, elaborate dinner parties with lots of great food and wine, ones that go into the night. These are the types of evenings I miss most right now during the pandemic. I tend to work on my writing in the morning and early afternoon, so breakfast and lunch are more solitary affairs!

Mountain or beach
I love to hike, especially with my dog Edith Ann. And I like when the hike ends at a beautiful lake. Edith Ann will jump in any time of year, but I reserve swimming for summer.

Introvert or Extrovert
I’m a practicing extrovert, meaning I can pretend to be an extrovert when I need to, but I’m really an introvert.

And even more fun . . .

You are stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
I would definitely need a book, and it would have to be something I could read more than once, so I might opt for Donna Tarte’s The Secret History. I read that book every few years and am thrilled to find something new in it every time. 2) My laptop with an endless supply of power. I rely on drafting in the computer and seem to have lost the ability to write long-hand. 3) Edith Ann. I’d worry about her too much is she wasn’t with me. Plus, she’s a lab, so maybe she’d swim off to find someone to rescue us.

My bio:
Edwin Hill’s critically-acclaimed crime novels include Watch Her, The Missing Ones, and Little Comfort. He has been nominated for Edgar and Agatha Awards, featured in Us Magazine, received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Library Journal, and was recognized as one of “Six Crime Writers to Watch” in Mystery Scene magazine. He lives in Roslindale, Massachusetts with his partner Michael and his favorite reviewer, their lab Edith Ann, who likes his first drafts enough to eat them.
