Now it’s time to learn more about the authors we read. . .

Why do you write the genre that you write?
While I read in all genres—in the mystery one everything from Noir to Cozies—I like Traditional Mysteries best and it felt like a good fit when I came to write the first novel.

What’s the quirkiest quirk one of your characters has?
In the early books, Faith Fairchild’s husband the Reverend Thomas Fairchild, is a borderline Luddite referring to his fingers poised over his manual typewriter as his computer and when he finally gives in to cell phone ownership rejects most Apps!

How did you come up with your pseudonym?
No pseudonym, but a good friend told me to use my middle name, not just first and last. He thought Katherine Hall Page sounded more “authorly”. I’ve always liked the whole name—Hall was my Great Great Grandmother’s last name—so I followed his advice.

Tell us how you got into writing?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and honing what I have written whether it was for school or work related. Good writing is good writing no matter whether it’s a report or a book. I got into published writing when my husband took a sabbatical and I had a year living in France when I wasn’t working and took the gift of time to write The Body in the Belfry.

What jobs have you held before, during and/or after you became a writer?
Before writing full-time, I was a secondary school teacher and administrator for many years. I developed a program for adolescents with special emotional needs, a school within a school model, that dealt with issues of truancy, substance abuse, and family relationships. I continued to work with schools in a variety of ways including writer-in-residence programs after the first book was published.

How many books do you have published?
33 books and essays/short stories in collections and magazines.

Where do you write?
I am fortunate to have a dedicated spacious, light-filled second floor room lined with bookcases. My desk overlooks a wooded yard. There’s a very comfy easy chair beneath one of the windows.

What is your favorite deadline snack?
Trader Joe’s Guilt-Free Macaroni and Cheese

Who is an author you admire?
Agatha Christie set the bar and is my most admired, but there are many many more. The late Margaret Maron immediately comes to mind.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
Literary women’s fiction (which may include mysteries!)

What are you reading now?
During these internationally and nationally difficult times, I find I’m rereading a great deal. Just now the Patricia Wentworths. The Miss Silver series. Maudie is so comforting. I’m also rereading Gregory Maguire’s Wicked in advance of the film.

What is your favorite beverage to end the day?
A friend gave me Taylor’s of Harrogate Yorkshire Bedtime Brew, which is decaf black tea with nutmeg, lemongrass, lemon balm and vanilla. Immediately searched out more and it’s a great way to ease into sleep.

What is next for you?
Another book!
