Now it’s time to learn more about the authors we read. . .
What drew you to the genre you write?
I’ve always loved mysteries and thrillers both in books and TVs. At first, I thought I was a romance writer, but my agent let me know in no uncertain terms that I was not and asked me to write her a mystery. Who knew?
How did you come up with your pseudonym?
I have two series. My cozy series, (The Jordan McAlister Mysteries,) is written as Liz Lipperman. My stand-alones and my paranormal mysteries (the Garcia Girls Mysteries) are written as Lizbeth Lipperman. I call them my “naughty ones” as they are grittier with language and an occasional sex scene.(The romance writers taught me how to write these scenes.)
Tell us how you got into writing?
I always knew that I wrote better than I spoke, so when my HS sweetheart (and later my hubby for 55 years) and I would fight, I would write a letter. I went to a hospital school of nursing right out of HS, and although I took the same boards and got the same money as the RN BSNs, I only had RN after my name. When my kids were teens, I decided I wanted those added initials Why? I’ll never know. All the colleges that I checked out wanted me to start over –this after I’d been a nurse for 20 years. So, I settled for a BSPA (Professional Arts) One of my electives was a creative writing class, and on the final exam, the professor wrote, “You should consider a career in fiction writing.” And here I am.
What jobs have you held before, during and/or after you became a writer?
As a nurse, I worked many hospital jobs and did audits for a Workers Comp Insurance Company. My favorite job was working in the GI lab at Baylor in downtown Dallas. My friend likes to call it my “Butts and Guts” job.
How many books do you have published?
Counting the one coming out March 30, I have eight cozies, five paranormal mysteries, three thrillers, and two shorts.
Where do you write?
I write longhand on the couch and then dictate to my computer at my desk. I ‘m a pathetic typist.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Thrillers and mysteries
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I played the saxophone for four years in my HS marching band.
Who is an author you admire?
Oh gosh, there are way too many to list. Because I love mysteries so much, a few are Coban, Patterson, Grisham, and James Lee Burke.
Have you any advice for aspiring or beginning writers?
Never quit writing. The best advice I ever got came from the infamous Nora Roberts, “You can fix anything but a blank page.” I am very undisciplined, so I don’t write every day, but when I do sit down to write, I write for hours and even forget to eat sometimes.
What is next for you?
DRESSED TO KILN, the next book in my Jordan McAllister series, come out in March 2027. Also not sure, but possibly a new series.
Where can we find you?
Anywhere that books are sold. And at www.lizlipperman.com. If you want to friend me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lizlipperman.author), just let me know in a message who you are since I have so many crackpots trying to get into my address book.
NOW TO HAVE SOME FUN . . .
Breakfast, lunch, or dinner:
My breakfast consists of a peanut butter bread dipped in coffee. (I know. Freaks my friends out.) That has been my breakfast routine since I was a toddler (as it has for my 8 other siblings.) I usually grab a sandwich for lunch and have my biggest meal at dinner (which the experts say is not the best idea.) That little saying runs through my head every now and then–Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper. I like to cook, so I am forever copying recipes from FB and trying them. Found some gems as well as some stinkers.
Fruits or vegetables:
Veggies.
Sweet or salty snacks:
Salty.
Ice cream, cake, or pie:
Do I have to pick? I never grew up eating pies. I’d have to say cakes, especially really moist ones. I always post recipes in the back of my cozies, and in my latest one, Dressed to Kiln, there are twelve yummy ones.
Cooking, baking, or dining out:
All three. I love to cook and definitely love to bake, but I do eat out a lot as well.
City life or country living:
I’m a city girl.
Beach or mountain:
Beach. I’m cold-blooded and always freeze when we go to the mountains
Early bird or night owl:
Night owl.
Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall:
Because I’m so cold natured, believe it or not, I love the HOT Texas summers.
Extrovert or introvert:
Extrovert. My kids always say, “Mom, do you have to talk to everyone?”
AND EVEN MORE FUN . . .
What is your favorite movie?
There are so many. I loved Terms of Endearment and Steel Magnolias. I also love all the Harlan Coban mystery series on Netflix. And I can’t forget the classic Jimmy Stewart movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. I watch it every year.
You are stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
My God, my family, and ice water. I drink tons of it, I know you were expecting me to say books, but here’s a little secret about me. I don’t read when I’m writing. As I mentioned earlier, I am really undisciplined, and if I’m reading about someone else’s characters, I have a hard time getting back to mine. When I retire I have a gazillion books waiting to be read.
My bio:
Liz Lipperman started writing many years ago, even before she retired from the medical field. Wasting many years thinking she was a romance writer but always having to deal with the pesky villains who kept popping up in all her stories, she finally gave up and decided since she read mysteries and obviously wrote them, why fight it? She has two mystery series–the Jordan McAllister Mysteries (formerly the Clueless Cook Series) and The Garcia Girls Mysteries (formerly A Dead Sister Talking Series) which are available in all formats. You might also want to check out her romantic thrillers, Mortal Deception and Shattered and Die Once More, an international thriller.
She wants readers to know that her G rated cozies are written as Liz Lipperman and her R rated, grittier mysteries as Lizbeth Lipperman. Check out her web page for a more detailed listing of her books along with reviews and trailers. When she’s not writing she spends her time doting on her four wonderful grandchildren.
Thanks for participating on my blog.
I’m loving that I’m here talking to you and to everybody who wants to talk to me. I will be gone until this afternoon watching my granddaughter perform in her final band competition before she head off to college next year. Oh my, where did the time go?
